So I was ordering bumpers online the other day and made an impulse purchase of all three videos for duck dog basics. I watched the first one, which basically deals with obedience all the way through force fetch. I started the second, which starts with force to pile and basic handling/casting. I have to say, so far I really like it.
If any amateur trainer's like myself are looking for a good instructional video, I have really enjoyed this one so far.

I used parts from waterdog for early socialization and early obedience (some from Dokken's book as well, but I didn't really do well with his explanations of things so I nixed that), and then used a follow along on you-tube from Freddie King, and force-fetch I did from advice I got on here from others like Jay and Tony.
I started with the intention of just training a basic duck dog, which I have now. I feel 100% confident I could take him hunting and he would do just fine. But doing this, now I want to learn more about hunt tests, handling, and the like... so I'm just going to keep training him further. Anything above what I have now is icing on the cake for me really.
I kind of researched most of the major trainer's methods and just picked the one that fit best with what I had available to me. Even though my dog is done with obedience, I saw some very useful tips on there that I can use to clean a few rough edges my dog has because of my lack of knowledge with training.
I really bought it for the second DVD which deals with handling, stop on whistle, casting, FTP, and those sorts of things. He has some really good drills for the FF to FTP to handling transitions.

I have Lardy's TRT2.
I also have Hillmann's:
Training A Retriever Puppy Fetch Command Land fundamentals Water fundamentals
I just recently purchased Dennis Voigt's "Training Retrievers Alone"
The most enjoyable to watch are Hillmann's videos and his style I feel most coincides with mine.
If I was you I'd get one of the following:
Lardy's TRT2 or Hillmann's Land and Water fundamentals
Then I'd get Dennis Voigt's "25 essential retriever drills"

Back in the 80s, the only book I could find was WaterDog. I was very fortunate to find a trainer in the Beaumont area(Bob Chance) who was willing to teach me. A friend of mine from work talked me into getting a British LAb pup from his friend who raises and trains British labs in East Texas. IT is good to be working with a young lab again I will have to take a look at Voigts "Training Retrievers alone"

I started off years ago like everyone else, Water dog. I am a Lardy fan now.

I used Duck Dog Basics I with my dog and then graduated to Lardy...this was all before Chris came out with II and III...I like the way he presents the material in I and would've continued had he released those videos prior to me needing them.
Biggest thing he gets that not everyone needs a hunt test dog and having a meat dog is alright.

I still believe Water Dog is a good basic training for a meat dog.
