Our new hog/deer lease looks like it will have some close up action. I've got a 6.5 CM, .243 and AR .223 to cover any longer shots on the edge of a wheat field but I'm thinking about a new toy to have with me in case a sounder comes in. I've kicked around a Glock 20, .22 Mag or .17 HMR rifle or file a Form 1 for a SBR in .300 BO. I've already got a YHM Phantom to run suppressed on a .300 BO.
This will be primarily a hog/coyote shorter range weapon. What direction would you personally go?

A semi-auto 22-250, or .17wsm if you decide to go with a .17 caliber. I'm sure many will vote suppressor though

.300 BO supersonic seems like an easy choice.

Rem 760 in .35 Remington, Ruger Blackhawk in .44 Mag of course. Not on your list, but that is a seriously deadly hog gun combination.

You can kick the .17HMR out of the line up. IMO it is not up to task for Coyotes or Hogs. Not ethically anyway.

Define close shooting...you talking shooting under 100 yards? Lots of repeat shots? Fancy optics or night/thermal options? So...you are looking at a 4" kill zone, and if shooting under 100 yards, you won't necessarily need the most accurate firearm made. Fancy optics and night conditions will work best on an AR platform or something else with a lot of rail.
Choose from: Ruger Mini 30 in 7.62x39, or a 300BO model Ruger 44mag Carbine AK47 AR in 7.62x39 or 300BO AR in 7mm-08 (shoots way longer than a 100 yards though)
or...try out one of the Saiga or AR 12 gauge shotguns. Loaded with a drum mag with 20 to 30+ rounds of buckshot.

If staying in the AR platform then a 6.8. Works very well out of shorter barrels.

From what we've seen so far, shots would be in the 50 yard range inside the woods. Thinking about a reflex sight or red dot if I go the .300 BO route. There would be longer shots on the wheat field but that's covered with the Creedmoor. I know a 12ga with 00 will work but looking for something that could be hanging next to me during bow season.

If you are shooting full power loads which I recommend if hunting hogs the 6.8 would be a better choice. Just giving my experience and opinion

I have a 6.8 currently that I am running. Jury is still out on it as I don't have enough trigger time in with it yet. I'm a 30cal fan and really am considering jumping into the ar 308 or back to a 300bo with supersonics. The subs for hunting on the 300bo leave lots to be desired.

What round are you using with the 6.8? The factory Hornady 120gr SST is a hammer on pigs

I need to have some more trigger time with it, but so far not 100% sold on the 6.8. With that in mind though, if I do stick with it, I'll be hitting you up for a sbr upper.

6.8 for me. As Eric said, the 120 sst does the job very well, and If you haven't been a customer of Eric's, (HDfireman from blackstonearms.com) his customer service and communication are hands down the best in the game... And no I don't get any hook up or benefit from saying that... I can just be kinda pesky with a lot of questions and impatient, and simply put he's the best hands down.. It is what it is. And if you're not going to go SBR or 6.8, I would go with a 7.62x39 upper Given the shorter distance application. PSA makes a legit 7.62 x39 16 inch upper and it has tons of awesome reviews Loads of cheap range and hunting ammo options and would make a great back up beater cheap range let a friend borrow kind of upper. Good luck whatever you decide.
Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.

Another vote for 6.8SPCII chamberings. Pound for pound and dolloar for dollar, you cannot beat the down range energy these things deliver through a handy 16" barrel. Of course.... speaking in terms of handloading vs factory ammo.

Drop the 17HMR and 22Mag and use the 300BO. You'll want a showstopper, not a piss-'em-offer.

I would NOT recommend a rimfire weapon for hogs.
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.
