I lost a chicken the other evening and had no idea what could have gotten it because I was outside and it was still daylight before they headed back to roost. They like to roam out and eat my corn at my feeder. I have a camera set-up and pulled the card. Now I know...red-tailed hawk!

Well that stinks. Not a fan of hawks since I have chickens and a lot of quail around the house.

Looks like a coopers hawk to me, but in any case, chicken is on the wrongs side of that deal!

My mom is a crazy old cat lady that lives on 10 acres on a farm. She has (had) like 40 cats, most of which were barn cats, but a few were house cats that were tame.

A couple of years ago, she started noticing a drastic drop in her cat population and feared coyotes. But she also has 6 really big dogs, so I told her it was unlikely coyotes inside the fence, which covers most of the area the cats roam. I recommended a game camera which she was going to get, but right before her very eyes at breakfast one morning a friggin' giant owl swooped down and grabbed her biggest, heaviest cat named "digit" because he had 6 toes on his front paws. Owl couldn't quite carry Digit away and he actually got away from it, but problem solved.

It moved on after taking over 15 of her smaller cats.

winner, winner, _______________ dinner. food We had cats disappear during the night and didn't know what was doing it, then one night the chickens were making a lot of noise and we saw an owl that had one down. That's when we figured out the cats disappearing was probably due to the owl.

Quote:
In the United States, chickenhawk or chicken hawk is an unofficial designation for three species of North American hawks: the Cooper's hawk which is also called a quail hawk, the sharp-shinned hawk and the red-tailed hawk. The term "chicken hawk", however, is inaccurate. Although Cooper's and sharp-shinned hawks may attack other birds, chickens do not make up a significant part of their diet; red-tailed hawks have varied diets, but may opportunistically hunt free-range poultry.

Historically, misinterpretation of the name "chicken hawk" has labelled these birds as pests, hence justifying their slaughter. Officially, per the American Ornithologists' Union's list of bird names, the term has become obsolete as applied to birds, but still enjoys widespread colloquial use in rural areas where any of the three species has been seen as a threat to small outdoor animals kept as pets or livestock, especially chickens.

While the term is still widely used by those who keep such animals, it is too ambiguous to be of any scholarly usefulness, especially since the meaning of hawk differs between America and Europe; thus, the term's propriety (or lack thereof) depends entirely upon context.

The unofficial names of other raptors that are derived from their supposed prey include: duck hawk (peregrine falcon), sparrowhawk, goshawk (northern goshawk), pigeon hawk (merlin), fish hawk (osprey) and quail hawk (Cooper's hawk).
