Texas has monkeys, kudu, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, red deer, ibex and all sorts of game from across the ponds (Atlantic and Pacific). Exotic game ranching FTW. We have a lot of fenced-in elk. Some free range stuff along NM border, but Columbus is no where near that. Definitely high fence, or escapees of one.

Odd that they are bugling this time of the year. Wonder if it's an elk or something else that sounds similar?
I did a quick google search "elk columbus tx" and found a few places that offer exotic hunts near Columbus. None that I ever heard of, and none that listed a price for elk, but it was a quick look just to see what was in the area.

There is a place just a few miles east of Columbus on the North side of the interstate called Tupperwines or something like that. I think it's a craft or candle store or something. They used to keep 10-20 head of elk in a little hf pasture that faced the service road. There were several really big bulls in the group. The last time I passed thru there I didn't see them from the interstate so maybe he sold them or moved them.

I live in Columbus. There are lots of high fenced places in the surrounding areas with elk in them, but I'm almost positive there are none free ranging. Unless some got out of a high fenced area.
There are some free ranging axis North of Columbus, @ Weishuhn Road and Zimmerschiedt Road. Place was cut up into a subdivision and the high fence surrounding it was neglected / tore down in spots. Not positive, but there may have been / still might be other exotics there free ranging as well.

Toepperwein owns a whole sale fake plant shop and the high fence just east of Columbus on I-10. Last I heard, poachers killed a few bulls, it had the local paper, and I think they found the kids that did it. They also poached a few bulls on the Neiser place North of Sheridan. Not sure if he sold the rest or they are still there. I havent been that way in a while.

I had a small herd of axis in my yard one day off of Brunes Mill Road about 6 yrs ago. They left and headed towards Cummins Creek. There is a pretty large ranch off of Brunes Mill that had a large herd of elk- over 40+ bulls at one time.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

I know CR 2152, lots of land been for sale down it lately, that connects with 90A. Have you owned your place for awhile? I work in Sheridan and live in Columbus. Just East of Rock Island on 90A, to the North, is 1500+ acres high fenced ranch with Axis and Blackbuck. That is prob the closest high fenced ranch around you. Maybe you heard the axis?
