Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Too long for me. Anything interesting?

A little long, but I liked it.

He said things I've heard from others was a mistake. He thought puppies should flush birds.

Guess it depends on your method of training.

I have been saying that on this forum for a while now. Chasing birds builds the desire to hunt and find birds. Makes sense to me and it works

He got sent to bird dog ban camp. A lot depends on the pup.

He's lived in ban camp for a long time, but its not because of his training methods.

I don't believe Mr. Miller faked any papers. The problems came up when the sire DNA'd but the mother didn't. Ferrell can't be held responsible for what the owners of the female(s) did or didn't do. When the American Field asked him to cooperate he said he couldn't. They then dropped the hammer on him. I think bird dog folks owe Ferrell a bunch for the work he did building the Miller prefix.

I don't think most of us will ever 100% know if he intentionally faked any papers on EPs, or not.
But I agree with Chet.

Just for the record.......Do I think Ferrell knew what some owners were doing? You bet. Did he know that some might take the best pups out of three litters and register them as one litter, maybe, well probably. Did he falsely register pups? nope. The owner of the female registered the litter and Ferrell did what he was bound to do by filling out the owner of sire form which states when and who was bred. The female owner brings in a bit&h and Ferrell gives him the filled out form. What happens after that is murky. Again all the problems were on the female side of the breeding.

I disagree with the puppy flushing, the best ones I ever had & trained were not allowed to flush, they were so hunt driven that after a day of hunting in briar country, tails & ears would be bleeding.

hold on Newt, we got a runaway

I allow chasing at a very young age. When they are too small to chase very much or far.

There's a big difference in pen raised and wild quail. Wild quail will teach them that they can't catch. Pen raised will do the opposite.

Bill is right on the money. I have a year old pup that has never seen a pen raised bird. From the second week of the season he was allowed to flush and chase and he did it a lot. But after a week or so on the ground he was pointing them. Unfortunately the last 3 or 4 weeks of the season I found the birds to be real jumpy on our lease so he was exposed to running birds and many early flushes. All taught him that he had to stop or they were gone. Like Ferrell said "when they start flash pointing they're telling you they need some help". Frank will now get some help and has learned a bunch about quail.

I sold a puppy a long time ago to a man that called me when the pup was 10 months old. He told me he wanted his money back and I asked why. He said that the puppy had knocked and chased 10 coveys of birds over the weekend. 10 months old now! I asked him how many birds had the older dogs handled. He said 3. You got it! I took that pup back without blinking an eye. He was just screaming "break me, break me". Pup died at 14 with probably 3000 birds shot over him. He broke easy and never lost his desire. On his last hunt , I took him to the field out of courtesy to him with my young dogs not expecting much. Young dogs were full broke and I expected them to put it on him. He found 11 coveys that afternoon ahead of the young dogs. He took them to school! Ferrell knows what he is talking about. If the pups will not chase a bird at a young age, let them go! Find the ones that will. This is a part of the culling process for me granted that I give more pups away than I keep for this very reason.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.
