I read this interesting article regarding a finite element analysis of barrel harmonics and fluting.

Barrel Harmonics

that's a mouth full there but I take it that a fluted barrel will be lighter and stiffer with less muzzle sag, right? confused2

It's easy become absorbed on Varmint Al's site and lose track of time. I don't remember the first time I saw it but it was probably ten years ago. Another good one is Steve's Pages.

Not stiffer.

When a fluted barrel weighs the same as a regular barrel, yes (i.e. it will be larger diameter). Conversely, if you take two barrels the same diameter and then flute one, it will not be as stiff. I did not study the article but it makes sense to me.

Right. Intuition might suggest that you can make a barrel stiffer by fluting it, but that would be incorrect.

Flute it AND lop it off a few inches....., then it will be even lighter, it'll get back some stiffness depending on how much you shorten it, and it will have the super-cool looking flutes. Plus it will have whatever added heat dissipating benefits come from increasing the surface area.

Here's an excerpt from that page:
Quote:
The fluted barrel has less stiffness but, even more important, less weight to support. The material removed is from areas that do not efficiently provide support. The reduced weight is better supported by the remaining lands between the flutes.
