Made my first knife, with just a hack saw and file. A lot of work and not the best thing to look at but I'm proud of my first attempt at a knife. What do you guys think?

Great looking knife, much better looking than the first or second knives I did.

I can't imagine me doing that well with only hand tools.

It's a pretty decent looking knife, you have some talent, keep developing it.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I think it looks good. Even more impressive with the simple tools used. Walter

Honestly, meh... Not really very good, probably should just give it to me and start on another.
OK, truthfully I think you did very good, Clean lines, good appeal to most sportsmen. You kept it simple and very useful. I am curious as to the steel you used and also if you have experience working with steel. Also would be interested in knowing why you made it. That is, some bladesmith made their first knife because they couldn't afford a custom, others wanted to see how long it took, how difficult, some couldn't find the exact size or shape, whether blade or handle.
Will you be making another or is this the alpha and omega?
You did very good from what the photo shows. Congrats, carry it proudly.

Did you heat treat it?
If not, hopefully the steel you used has been. Real important in order to sharpen and keep a good edge.

Never any experience with working with steel (outside of my career being a carbon steel line pipe salesman). Always wanted to try and make a knife for myself and needed a new hobby. I used 440c stainless and it was heat treated by Texas knife supply here in Houston....they're about 2 miles from my house so letting them do it sounded better than cranking up my BBQ pit or something. Certainly won't be the last one I make. Next one will be a fillet knife for my dad so I'll post some pics when I'm done and get some more feedback
