I've got a Remington 7-08 that I want to get some work done on. thinking of getting the barrel fluted to drop a little weight, and getting the end of the barrel threaded at the same time. I recall seeing some great work done by some of the folks on here. Can you please send me some recommendations - and if you are the one that actually does some of the work, send me a link to see some pics. If I recall correctly, fluting can take up to a pound off the weight of the gun? Is that correct? Looking to see what kind of price I am looking at, as well as turn around time.

What contour is your barrel? If it's not a fat contour you won't see that much gain or loss of weight. It might not be worth the money.

I believe kamfeld has some say on the matter on his website.

As said it counts on the barrel contour. The only barrels that I have fluted are guns i use at the range. The fluting also increase the surface area of the barrel and helps dissipate heat a little quicker. The last barrel I had fluted was done by Longrifles in SD. Heavy contour 338. Shipped and returned within 2 weeks.

I sent a 26" varmint contour barrel to Kampfield, got it back in 2 or 3 weeks. Had it cut down to 22" , re-crowned and deep fluted. Started out weighing 6 pounds and when returned it weighed 3 pounds 2 oz.

Not sure if there is a particular term I need to identify the contour, but Remington claimed it is a "light contour". It is a Rem 700, 7-08 Mountain SS barrel in a laminate stock. Made in 2005. Barrel is 22"
I'll look up Derrick and also call Kampfield. The rifle shoots decent, but I want to really get it to have the tightest groups possible, reduce recoil (for the kiddos), and possibly knock some weight off. What would you guys do? Just look for a new barrel entirely? If so, what do you suggest? What other items would best help the rifle to achieve the desires I mentioned above?

You don't have have enough meat on at barrel to cut weight and get your money worth. Plus the break would add that weight right back.

You might look at adding a muzzle brake and getting an ultra light stock such as a McMillan edge fill

George your best bet would be to send your rifle to chad and have him customize light recoil loads.

Or get a lighter kicking caliber and build a custom.

Chad will be the cheapest

As I recall the 700 mountain rifles are already pretty lightweight, and the barrel will be pretty thin as well. I like BIL's suggestion that you put it in as light a stock as possible (although the factory stock might not be very heavy) and have Chad work up some lighter loads for it. After that, if necessary you can bed it and put a Timney in it to help with accuracy.

First off, thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I spoke with Derrick, who is a really nice guy. I think at this point after looking at some options, I'm going to go with recrowning, bedding it, and check to see that the free floating job that was done initially is still holding up. Also going to go with a Timney 510. Hopefully that will get me where I want to be, without spending too much. Then I might go ahead and chat with Chad about some lighter loads before next season.

QuitShootin...It is a pretty lightweight rifle, compared to others I've handled in the same series. Stock isn't bad...but will look into McMIllan (thanks, BIL).
