Trying to get some ideas for a duck blind. I will be building one this summer, so if anyone has ideas or pictures they want to share please post!

With all the water I hunted so far up the creeks the only company I had this season was deer hunters. Deer hunters and acorn hungry wood ducks and mallards.

Misfire, can you post a closer picture of the hinge mechanism you used on that blind? We are in the process of building another as well and want to do something similar. Are you happy with it or anything you think can be improved upon?

Here is the floating blind I built. I am going to cut off the flaps and just use saltgrass sticking up above head height where you can stand up and see well and when sitting down you are covered well. The flaps are too much for the kind of hunting we do. When you have the flaps down and see a duck and go to flip them up if flares them almost all the time.

Here it is after we put saltgrass on it.

You did not say boat, water, or bank and my current project I doubt is of any help with ideas, but here it is anyway.

I have a very old decked pirogue that I restored. I use it as a layout boat and still will be used that way sometimes as the blind can be flipped back down flat on the deck. I am making changes to be used like a punt boat as well. The OD is too dark and not brown enough, so that will change. I am mounting original 1800s forward facing reciprocating oars as used on Reelfoot lake during the market hunting days. The flip top blind was made by a company in Louisiana in the early 1970s and no longer made. The material is original and intact, but very thin. As well the frame is too high than I want so after some trial and error lowering it, a new camo cover will be made for it. Likely with more sturdy wind blocking material and loops for attaching grass if I want, but have not decided if I want to stay with an old school camo or upgrade it. The wood blocks under the mounts are temporary as I am trying different locations on the boat for the oar mounts and blind so that I can comfortably row with the blind in place and have it operational to be flipped out of the way. It rows pretty good, but takes practice to do it without having to think about it. Dash rows it much better than I can. There is a space for the dog behind me and a closeable slit in the back of the blind for the dog to come and go onto the back deck in times I am hunting beached or tied off. I am unable to find original mounts for the oar brackets, so I am using early 1900s ford tractor ball joint socket mounts that eventually will be mounted on the deck with supports underneath. I hope too to add cleats or low rails or cord around the top edge of the deck for attacking camo material when needed. Currently I just shovel whatever is on the bank onto the deck. Perhaps I should wear period hunting cloths and hunt with an old SXS as well and ask everyone I see with a confused "what year is it?". I had to put the project aside this last season, but it will be ready for next season.

The doors are a simple "free falling" design. I used some cheap door hinges I picked up at Lowes. Here is s link to the original build thread. Let me know if that doesn't answer your questions.

Sniper I love the history in those boats. Where in the world did you find the oars?

The oars came off of ebay. There is a single 1884 patent so these are original Fred Allen bowfacing oars. A blind like that one was advertised on the forum by a drive by poster. I did not see his post until 5 years later when I ran across it by accident in a google search. I searched for the seller online and found him on an Arkansas hunting forum and contacted him there. Turned out he had a second well used one in his barn and we worked out a fair price.

Since the subject is on blinds. I also have another flip top blind that was made by a company in Louisiana. It is so similar to the Pirogue blind that it almost has to be a spinoff designed off the older blind. I don't think it is made anymore either. but it is a really cool design. With bungee cords built into the top to hold it down, there is a foot lever in the floor that releases the top and allows it to quickly flip out of the way hands free. I plan to incorporate something like that into the Pirogue blind too.

Short 17 second video, you can hear my son (then 12 yrs old), get excited about birds circling behind us. I shot the first one, he shoots the second one, took him 2 shots...

No, it was just a cheap video camera I had forever, digital tape. I turned it on at legal and just let it run till it ran out of tape, about an hour. Remote on and off would have been nice.

Built my own with PVC and camo netting. Folds down nicely for travel, pops up pretty quick. A couple bundles of Palm fronds and it hides away pretty nice. Easily removable for summertime fishing.
