Going to be buying or building an AR10, going with the 308, but not sure what barrel length. I would like to keep ammo the same between the 308 bolt gun and this one. The bolt gun has a 24 inch barrel and loves 168 SMK and doesn't really care for anything lighter. Thinking of either an 18 or 20 inch barrel with muzzle break. Will the 18 shoot the 168's ok?

Barrel length won't really matter, the twist rate is what will matter, and whether or not the AR10 happens to like that same load. I assume the bolt gun is 1:10 twist?

My 16" 1:10 liked Chad's 168 Amax. Shot very well.

Yes. Wasn't sure if barrel length and twist rate played a factor. Like if a 16 inch 1:8 wouldn't stable a 168 like a 24 inch 1:8 would. Prob going to run the 18 inch barrel than.

Good to know. Prob going to hit him up for some of that to see if they both like it. I hate to say it, and it's no fault of Chad, but his bulk 168 that I got a year ago doesn't like my bolt gun.

I want to see a 1:8 twist .30 cal.

The shorter barrel makes less velocity, that's all.

Look how short a .45 ACP pistol barrel is, and it stabilizes a 230 gr.

I would go 18 or 20, but I do like long barrels.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

1:10 was thinking about my AR15 barrel hammer

So with that theory a 4.5" barrel is enough to stabilize a .30cal? The 45 is a lot shorter that the 30cal

I was trying to get the point across that a 1:10 twist 16" will stabilize just as well as a 1:10 twist 26", it will just make for a slower muzzle velocity.

My Wilson Combat is 20 and it really likes the bulk I got from Chad in 178 Amax. up

I'd get the 20 inch. Unless you're going to be clearing rooms with it the loss in velocity isn't worth the loss in weight.
