I've owned a couple of .308 semi-auto rifles in the past; a DPMS Recon, a Sig 716 Patrol, and a current M&P 10. However, I have not had the chance to shoot an M1A. I was just curious about the consensus from people who may have experience with both; or at least experience with a SR25 platform compared to the M1A.

Ive have an m1a socom, and had an ar-10, also the fnar. Out of the 3 the m1a has been the least accurate. I like the m1a alot, but for the price a little disappointed with accuracy, even after upgrades like voltr stock. For accuracy, after i found the load the fnar has produced outstanding accuracy for the money. I like it a lot more once i ditched the pistol grip stock and went to bar stock. The ar-10 is more accurate than the fnar but at twice the price.

The M1A is such a blast to shoot that I really regret getting rid of mine. It shot very smooth like a cadillac so if you have never had one then I guess it depends on how you will use it. If you are looking to punch a bullet in the same hole look elsewhere but if you want to go blasting with some adrenaline behind your finger then you will love it.

I am definitely getting another M1a or Garand. probably a Garand this time so I can stay with 30-06 and not have to add another caliber.

I was NOT expecting accuracy reports to be that much off of the AR-10 "style" rifles. One of the things I really like about the M&P 10 is that I can dope my scope from 147-150gr target rounds and stay within 1.5-2" at 100 and switch to 168gr MK and stack rounds at the same distance.

The M1A can be accurate but you need to spend some money to make it happen. You cant just go buy a Springfield standard rifle and expect to be under 1 inch. You need to get a National Match M1A for decent accuracy.

Awesome rifle for sure!!!

I personally would go with the FNAR. But between the two I would go MP 10 if you have familiarity with AR pattern rifles, M1A if you like to tinker and are willing to invest time and money to make it as accurate as posible

I had a DPMS 308 and got rid of it due to the cold shot being in one place and the follow up shots in another. I have a M1A Standard. It is a very accurate rifle. It is an older one made out of USGI parts and a Krieger barrel before Springfield ran out of those parts. I suspect that has something to do with the accuracy. I also have a FNAR, it too is a superb rifle. It shoots sub MOA with factory ammo out of that chrome lines barrel. What I really like about it is how well it shoulders and how you can adjust the LOP and comb with the included spacers.

M&P-10...M1A is heavy and difficult to suppress.

My solution was to get them all. I have an Armalite AR10 DEF10 carbine, a Springfield Armory M1A, SAR-48 (Imbel FAL), and SAR-8 (Greek built HK91)...I ain't picking one over the other as they are all mine, mine, mine!

I wouldn't say my M1A lacks in accuracy compared to my Armalite. But it's an older M1A with everything on the gun USGI except for the receiver. It also has a Smith Enterprises US military scope mount and Leupold scope to help in the accuracy department. It's bigger and heavier than the Armalite - but with everything but the receiver and scope being US military it has a presence about it the Armalite never will.

My SAR-48 (full on Imbel built FAL) and SAR-8 - are not scoped but also have their benefits. The FAL has probably the best balance of all of them and the SAR-8 being a license built HK91 essentially is just a tank that will shoot anything and uses dirt cheap magazines that you buy by the 50 or 100 case lot...ever try to buy 100 M14 mags? smile

The SCAR 17 is an amazing rifle; but way out of my budget.

I'm with OKstate on that...I'd love to have any FN rifle (FAL, SCAR, P90, military collector M15A4) - but I just can't stomach the prices.
