I'm finally going to order one. I'm leaning Griffin Armament Sportsman Direct Thread or the Harvester. Will be used on .223, .243s, and .270s. I'm liking the light weight, and sub $600 price tag but I'm wondering how the aluminum housing will hold up if it falls over in the deer stand, the ground, etc. The guys at SilencerShop recommended it and a buddy has one. I can't figure out what it won't do that $1000 ones will.

So talk me out of it. Why should I spend $1000 on a "better" one?

Usually, it's the materials used and the internal baffle design that drive the price on a suppressor. There are multiple suppressor companies that use a simple X pattern for their baffle design. It works, but there are better options. Other companies research and test and create a better baffle design for increased suppression of the sound, and better the gas flow to spread the heat and muzzle pressure of the gasses. They also use better methods for attaching the suppressor to the rifle. Generally, you get what you pay for when it comes to suppressors. Yes, there is a difference from a simple can priced at $600 to a Shark or a Crux priced almost twice as high. Research the suppressors you are looking at and find out what's on the inside to know what the differences are.

I wouldn't buy an aluminum can. That's just personal preference. I don't care what they say about toughness I've seen the dings on aluminum cans. They get hot in a hurry as well. Hotter than stainless or titanium.

I also will never buy another quick attach. I have multiple cans and prefer thread on hands down. Not only do you have to put adapters on everygun you are planning on using a quick attach but you have to make sure you tighten it to same clicks. Over time it may loosen a notch and change impact.

I know I want Direct Thread for sure. I can't stand to look at a flash hider QD mount on a bolt gun. I'm not going to take it to the range and dump a 30 round mag through it. I don't care about using it on 22LR so being able to take it apart isn't necessary. It will have a cover on it so heat isn't as big of a concern.

you defiantly get what you pay for

It doesn't take a 30 round mag to make them hot.

I have a 30 cal Harvester I use on a 308 and a 7mm Rem Mag. The can is great. I've shot over deer (30 yards away) to kill pigs at 100 yards away. The deer don't run, they just turn to look at the pigs. Remember that if a can gets warm quick, it will also cool down quick. The Harvester will get warm after a couple of rounds, but I'm rarely shooting more than 1 round and I'm not holding the can right after shooting.

Alpine Shooting Range on the south side of Ft.Worth has a good selection of suppressors in stock. I bought a Thunder Beast 30P-1 last month for $800.
It might be worth a drive from Mineral Wells.

I have a Griffin Sportsman Direct Thread and like it greatly; I also have SilencerCo suppressors and like them greatly.

I think it unfair to compare the Sportsman and Harvester to more expensive titanium models, as the comparison ignores the very differing product design goals. The aluminum models are designed to be light and inexpensive and their primary purpose is hunting, plain and simple. They are not designed for continuous or sustained fire and they're not designed to be cutting edge devices. They are designed to be reasonably priced hunting suppressors that will last a lifetime with normal hunting use.

If you want good durability and the best usability, then get titanium.
If you want the best durability and you're willing to give up usability, then get steel.
If you want decent durability, excellent usability and low price, then get aluminum.

The limitations on the aluminum suppressors are reasonable and are very openly disclosed. As a consumer you can decide whether the $550 aluminum or the $1100 titanium suppressor is right for you.

I shot this sow late Saturday afternoon with a Griffin Sportsman DT equipped rifle. When I asked her whether she found it degrading to be shot with a budget priced suppressor, she didn't say much, so I guess she didn't feel it made much of a difference.

These guys had no response about me using a stainless steel Harvester. First 2 pics are the same pig to show shot placement (behind the ear hole). I shot a pig out of the first sounder that came in and this guy came in with a 2nd sounder within 10 minutes.

This was a different hunt. This pig was smaller than the one above.

I've got 3 YHM suppressors and have been very satisfied with them. 762 QD Ti I have had for about 5 years and put hundreds of rounds through it from 300RUM to 223 and it performed great. I also have the 7.62 LT and a 22 Mite. YHM isn't as savy with their marketing or social media prevalence but they make a solid product.

Yep, I love my YHM Phantom QD 762. It is the stainless model, kind of wished I'd got the Ti model, but I'm still very happy with mine. Life time warranty and rated all the way up to 300RUM, full auto rated, and SBR rated. Can't really beat it for the price if you ask me.
