A fellow I have known for fifteen years is selling this Remington 700 .280 Rem. The scope is a Leupold 6.5-20x50 (Mark 4?). He bought the rifle and scope new but I don't know how long ago though it has been a number of years I believe. He said he has shot less than 1 box which I believe. Has sat in his safe since new after firing those few rounds. Essentially brand new condition - he probably still has all of the original paperwork and packaging. He has decided to sell and offered it to me first. $1500 is his firm price. Thoughts on the price? Do I need more info? I have no idea. I don't need it but if it's at least a decent deal I may very well pick it up. Thanks for your help. PS Edit to clarify for mods: I'm not trying to sell this for my friend rather I'm looking for guidance on a potential purchase

Great round I love the 280 and 280ai. As for cost your not getting a deal. You could get that setup for the same price without much trouble. Look at gunbroker for an idea of what they're going for.

It's simple. Price out the rifle, then price out the scope, rings and bases. Add those up, and there you go. But that scope is not a Mark 4. If he has the paperwork, then he has the model # and info you can price it from.

I don't think I'd pay more than about $1100 or so for it. Maybe $1200.

as Chad stated, I don't think that's a mark 4 scope. can you get the model number? I think it should have a side focus knob, 30mm tube, looks like a VX-3.
I think he's about 300.00 off. I would want to shoot it too. imo, there are more accurate guns out there for the money.
the brake is his loss, you should not pay extra for it.

It does seem a bit high priced. On the other hand, it's a nice looking rig. Make an offer and let him decide. It'd be a great deal at $1000 and a good deal at maybe $1200. And...that isn't the scope I'd have on the rifle (not that I don't like the scope. I have one just like it). Maybe you offer to buy the rifle only and scope it yourself.

Agree with others - that's overpriced.

Probably a Vari-X III and maybe a VX-III. VX-3 is relatively new.

I have been considering building a new rifle so I suppose I shouldn't offer at all and just put my money into exactly what I want. After all, we're a good bit off on price and he approached me about it, not the other way around. Thanks for all the feedback.

Probably a Vari-X III and maybe a VX-III. VX-3 is relatively new. Yeah, looks like the older Vari-X III. It will say the model on the gold ring near the objective lens. Good scope but not made anymore. The scope was around $750 new. The $1500 price sounds to me like what he paid for it new. Doesn't sound like a deal to me.

Like stated before not a mark 4, probably vari x 3 by the looks of the bell. Used in like new condition probably 400-500 range use ebay for market price. SS/syn bdl configuration id say $600-700 tops. Leupy rings and bases $40. So imo id pay max $1100 for that set up.
Tell em this rule of thumb is take off 30% off a run of the mill factory set up selling used. And yeah the brake he eats.

$1100 max. Maybe less since he put that awful brake on it.

An outstanding rifle package, however a bit over priced. Make him an offer after you do the research.

If he wants to give you a "friend deal" tell him to see what he can get for it and then give you "last look"
