Well I picked up a Browning A-bolt in 338 Win Mag. In SS. Couple of small scratches on the barrel but otherwise it's in really good shape. Didn't realize ammo was so pricey, anybody know of some good cheaper ammo and where to buy. Does anyone hunt with this round or shoot long range or both. Love to hear how you like/dislike the gun, so keeps those cards and letters coming.

Its not bad if you reload for it. Ive been told Its a hammer on elk from those that own one.

My son has a Winchester model 70 in that caliber. One cool thing about a .338 Win mag is after shooting at the range, you can clap your shoulder blades together. After your vision clears anyway.
Seriously, unless you enjoy pain, your probably not going to shoot it much anyway so ammo prices might not be a huge factor.

I've got an older (1982) Winchester model 70 24 inch barrel, wood stock, and it's not all that much of a kick. However it does have a Gentry muzzle brake on it which helps I guess. But, I can set and shoot for as long as I want and it doesn't wear my shoulder out. I dropped a mule deer in his tracks at 150 yards with it in Montana in November. Very nice rifle. I do reload and keep 50-100 rounds on hand at all times. Ready to try it on hogs now. You'll enjoy that rifle.

I hunt with a .338WM for big stuff. It has accounted for a few Elk, several Nilgai, a Scimitar...and also a Muley and a couple of WT too just because I love the rifle.
I hand-load 225gr Nosler Accubonds and they have demonstrated very reliable performance. You can buy the Remington Core-Lokts for it, a little cheaper.
Congrats on the new gun. Great caliber! I would never part with mine, and just sprung for a Timney trigger for it last year. Mine is a Ruger M77 Mk II, stainless in a laminate stock.

That gentry makes a world of difference. I had one on a 300 wby and it was like shooting my wifes 243ai. Without out i would have sold that rifle in a hurry. Gentry brakes are one of the most effective in my opinion especially for a cyindrical no slab type brake.

If you can find some once-fired brass, the pricing would not be that bad. The brass is a little expensive to load the first time, but once you have it, you can reload it multiple times. If you can not find the ammo or bullet you want to shoot, let me know and I can load it for you. The only negative of the Browning A-bolt rifles is the short magazine box. This will not allow you to shoot the heavier 300 grain bullets. But the 250 hpbt would work.

I have a Lee Turret Press and I already reload other cartridges, so all I need are the dies and some bullets. I think I'm going to put a Limb Saver on it and skip the muzzle brake, had one on a 270WSM and it was gawd awful loud. Every time I shot anything with it in the woods it took half an hour for the acorns to stop falling around me. Thanks for the replies, keep them coming.

Well I went to the range today and zeroed the scope at 50yds. That's all they have at Target Master, but I'll get out to one of the outdoor ranges when it warms up some more. I had bore sighted it last night and it only took three rounds to zero. Then I shot another 10tds to sort of get used to the recoil. Glad I slipped on the Limb-Saver. My shoulder is pretty good right now.

Next, you need a Marlin 45-70. Wonderful round out to 175-200 yards. More of a push than a fast kick. Now that's a fun rifle to shoot. Does a number on coyotes and is quick about it. They don't run off.

Thanks, but no thanks, had one and didn't like it. I'm sure I traded if off for something and prolly traded that one already too.
