What or who determines if not processing a certain animal is waste of game or not and how is this determined? An example of this would be it is considered a waste of game if you do not process a javelina, but it is okay to not process an Auodad (my assumption). Just wondering if there is a chef that works for the TP&W that is continuously working on recipes so certain animals get upgraded to a status where it is a violation to not process them? Lol

I think the general rule is if it has a season and/or a bag limit, it is considered a game animal.

Waste of game would be not keeping any edible portion of a game animal in an edible condition. Doesn't matter if the hunter considers it a palatable meat only if it is a game animal according to TPWD.

Waste of Game: It is an offense (Class C misdemeanor) if a person while hunting kills or wounds a game bird or game animal and intentionally or knowingly fails to make a reasonable effort to retrieve the animal or bird and include it in the person's daily or seasonal bag limit. It is an offense if a person intentionally takes or possesses a game bird, game animal or fish and intentionally, knowingly or recklessly or with criminal negligence, fails to keep the edible portions of the bird, animal or fish in an edible condition. It is a Class A misdemeanor to fail to retrieve or to keep in an edible condition a whitetail or mule deer, pronghorn antelope or desert bighorn sheep hunted without landowner consent; from a vehicle, boat or aircraft; on a public road; at night; or with the aid of a light.

Doesn't say you have to eat it. Dogs will eat any meat.

What determines if an animal is a game animal besides just the declaration by TP&W? Wasn't the javelina put on the game animal list a few years back? Was wondering why?

In Texas, I believe all game animals are indigenous, but not indigenous animals are game animals. State (TPW) and Federal law make the determinations.

Javi is a game animal, Aoudad is not.... you must clean any animal listed under game by TPWD.

a well cleaned Javi would be hands down better than some old billy aoudad...
besides, all aoudads are vermin that should have never been let loose in this state..

I understand that, but what is used to determine whether an animal is a game animal or not?

Not necessarily. You can take the edible portions home, not eat them, and be legal. If they left the edible portions in the field, that would be illegal.

TPWD determines that, I suppose. Being native and of some value would factor in. Coyotes are native but not generally considered to be of any value. Pheasants are not native but are held in high regard. It's not quite black an white, but there is some rhyme and reason to it.

very good question... confused2 i seen the texasHF scratch hunting forum, see if anyone wants ta do a hog hunt.. Popular hunt, i called it the other wild game , had already seen & heard bout the games, culling, ground shrinkage, from years back when was leasing... Hog hunting has followed in the footsteps of deer leases... All about the big bucks... Land owners regulate the hunting, HF topics, neighbors stand too close ta fence.. As pappy once said: i got cheap posts , rofl many posts & some threads come up missing, 2cents postage do... Twas Blessed were grew up, twas bout families & friends hunting pudding food on the grill tis what twas teaching my kids.... If ya have the spair cash, can aford lease, stood up ta credit adviser, every one else was leasing... tis the deep pockets that rule & govern... Low income workers loose their job, labled disgruntled worker... Workmans comp they terminate ya.... Supply & demand ta answer the question... flag

I don't believe so. There is even one native deer that is classified as an exotic, although, technically, that particular subspecies may not be native.

So, a hunter can shoot an Axis and leave it laying in the field, but has to make the best use of a javelina that he has shot? That makes no sense at all.

Javis are a game animal to protect the specie.
From TPWD
Quote:
Historically, javelina were market-hunted in the United States for
their hides. In many parts of their range in Central and South
America they are still over-hunted for this purpose. In Texas, the
javelina was first given game animal status and the protection of
seasons and bag limits in 1939.

I think the way they look at it, is the species desirable and is it possible to over hunt it. Rabbit is not classified a game animal because it doesn't really need protection. Same with bobcat, coyote, and mountain lion. Squirrel and javalina are considered game animals because they have been over hunted in the past and needed protection. JMO

There's lots of people who say they just breast out a turkey and get rid of the rest. Is that going to warrant a ticket? They killed it, they tagged it, they took the parts they considered edible. The rest gets eaten by coyotes and vultures.

Same thing with a dove - it gets breasted and the rest discarded - is that a crime?

why not?
TPWD regulates NATIVE game...
others indroduced are considered non-native, hence NO season for axis, feral hogs, collared doves, walrus, etc...
if I wanna fence off penguins, I can and host shoots or petting events to my leasure...
and yes.. shoot axis, blackbuck and hippopotamus and feed buzzards..
landowners discrestion...
lotsa mis-imformed folks still call javalinas rodents...

I don't know. I'm asking. There have been stories posted on here of Game Wardens writing tickets because not enough meat was taken off a deer carcass. Apparently they left too much on the neck or something.
