So when did ARs become commercially popularized? No doubt it was a while before I got mine in 2011 but I didn't pay much attention. I really only bought mine to see what all the hype was about and haven't paid any more attention to them since. I was really pretty disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I like it but I'm not one bit t4cticool.

I said "I've never seen one", not that they don't. What I said is truth because it's been my experience. You're also talking about only budget AR's. I caught that. Yes, I did make an effort to compare apples with apples. I'm glad that you caught that. How much would a precision rifle that's comparable to one of my builds cost? I have about $1,300 in the one that I just finished (the Larue barrel was half off though). I'm genuinely curious. I've never owned a high end bolt action.

I have built several rifle and a pistol AR. They just dont do anything for me. Rather use a bolt gun.

There are no physical memories with a AR or most plastic guns. You remember that scratch in the stock from your first buck or dove hunt? Wood will do that.

There are no physical memories with a AR or most plastic guns. You remember that scratch in the stock from your first buck or dove hunt? Wood will do that. And I'd venture a guess that 99% of people couldn't tell you where 99% of the scratches on their stocks came from. My favorite gun has, and always will be a Savage model 99. I have multiple wood stocked guns, and enjoy refinishing them as a hobby. But I don't hunt with them much. Especially not if I'm walking or sitting in a brush blind. "Only accurate guns are interesting" and that's about my only criteria for a hunting rifle.

There are a lot of good comments above. Like most sportsmen I like the ARs like Fireman I will defend the AR shooters. HOWEVER, I am a bolt action rifle and single action revolver hunter, almost exclusively.

I would venture 99% of the people have a old, accurate or unaccurate wood stocked rifle that they wouldn't trade or sell for almost any price. But, they have AR'S they will sell or trade up for in a minute-especially if they hear the newest latest thing is more accurate.

I do not own any guns that I can out shoot - AR-15 and AR-10 included. But I'm not a precision shooter.
I am really attached to my wheel guns, and bolt guns. But it's hard to beat the sheer utility of the AR platform for an all purpose ranch gun in .223 or .308.

Interesting topic. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is getting really tired of nothing but AR's, 1911's, and tacticool SWAT-wannabe stuff in my gun magazines.

They are fast taking over the shooting world - no doubt. But popularity alone does not make them the best for the job. Kinda like with the presidential elections lately.....
