HOUSTON (KTRK) --

The University of Texas now says they will allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their guns into the classroom.

This change was recommended by a study panel back in December.

Deciding the campus carry policies has been the most difficult decision of my presidency. Please read the details: https://t.co/zs8uwNrrL6
— Greg Fenves (@gregfenves) February 17, 2016

Texas state law requires all public universities to allow licensed concealed handguns owners in the classroom by August 1, but does give some leeway to schools, allowing for gun-free zones. Concealed carry license holders must carry the gun at all times or keep it securely locked in their vehicle or in a dorm in a gun safe

A letter was sent out by UT President Gregory L. Fenves about campus carry.

It is always good when people are allowed to practice the basic human right of self defense.

Public universities will have to comply with this starting August 1. Community/junior colleges will implement it next year.

Kind of a silly statement. I wouldn't think any more people on campus would be carrying while impaired than there is in general society. Most certainly less drunk carriers on campus than at one of your family reunions. grin

As a parent of two college students, I agree and want the threat of CHL available. My insight is there are a number of these young people that have taken the time to get their CHL but now they don't have to leave it in the parking lot.

No more gun free/victim zones for the cowards that want to harm others. My opinion is that not many will carry but the threat is a real deterrent.

Remember the age to be eligible for concealed carry is 21...so its not your son or daughter right out of high school that will be carrying...hopefully a more mature individual. Not sure I would trust myself at 17-18 yo....but the army did so got all the killing out of my system and stayed legal doing it.

This is good.

I remember once when I was running late for class and I left my gun in the truck. Just as I walked away from the truck, a police stopped me and said there have been a lot of car breakins in that lot. I had to leave it behind by law.

How many Frat Party's are held in the Class Rooms? Also it is illegal for any one to carry while intoxicated, on or off campus.

Thank You

Yep, illegal to come on campus and start killing and mutilating people. Or raping. but it still happens and testosterone starts running high at drinking parties.

Yes it is illegal to do all of these things (as it should be) but the solution that a few of you seem to be suggesting to stop people from doing these illegal things is to make something else illegal? I don't think a drunken frat boy will go through the effort to get a LTC so that he would be able to carry. And if he (or she) does get an LTC and then carries while intoxicated we all agree and know this is illegal. So said person who is breaking the law by doing this would not be willing to break the law by carrying if campus carry was not passed? " I will only break the law, if it is legal to do so!" Makes loads of sense.

Good bye! if these folks want to live in Europe (or Australia)--go for it.

I also see that there are professors at the U of H complaining that the campus carry law would "chill" free speech. However, I understand many of these folks are only in favor of "free" speech as long as they agree.

It's a good thing. Anything that makes liberals,Democrats and progressives squeal is a good thing. Ooops can i say "squeal"? Do i need to give a trigger warning and provide a "safe" space if i use a porcine reference?
