My daughter and I were lucky enough to get a spot on another Texas Youth Hunting Program hunt - http://tyhp.alamark.com/ this one was located 16 miles south of Freer, TX – a good 6 hour drive from Arlington. There were a total of 6 youths picked for this hunt. We arrived on site around 2pm and after a quick orientation everyone headed out to their blinds. I can’t remember the order of all the harvests over the weekend but all 6 kids ended up with a doe by Saturday night. Several (including my daughter pictured below) also got javelinas. The javelina pictured had some nice tusks; we will be shoulder mounting her trophy. We were allowed to varmint hunt as well and although several bobcats and coyotes were spotted none were harvested. I did use my IPhone and a distress call to call a yote out of the brush but it was too far for a shot – still cool though, I’ve never used a call before and was surprised how quickly the yote came running out – it was actually just a video I found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEaCIedLFuc I later found an app and will be using that next time. Many thanks to the THYP, the Huntmasters and Guides, the Landowners and all those that make these opportunities available! Here’s the pics: A little snack: Before the Doe: Immediately after the doe: Great Job! Puttin' in the work: 80 yard shot for javelina: Nice size, this will be a shoulder mount trophy: More than one way to skin a cat or deer or...: Great view from the camp: (cant' get these pics to load) Great group of kids (sorry bout that orange flag): Wasn't even a full moon:

That will be a memory she carries for a long time.

Is that a whitetail cape, nalgi horns, javalina teeth, and bobcat eyes? That's my guess. Saw that at Freer Deer Camp and had to get a pic. Close relative of the elusive Jackalope.

We cooked the backstrap from the last javi which was much smaller. Not bad, I overcooked a bit so a little tough but I would definitely take the meat from a sow or small boar in the future and do a bacon wrap or something. This javi was BIG, STINKY, COVERED IN FLEAS - just had way too much in common with me to harvest the meat.
I did take the cape and head for the mount, by the time I was done skinning I did have fleas on me; found about half a dozen before the night was over. Yuk.

Congratulations to your daughter! What was she shooting? Buck in 2016? .243 single shot break barrel so she takes her time. She definitely has been asking for a opp for a branch antler buck, hopefully 2016/17 will be her first.
