Picked up a new IR Hunter MK II over the holidays. Mounted it on my 300 BO SBR. Shot a hog with it on New Years eve, and then a coyote last week... Both took off after shooting them.. found blood, but never bodies.. .

So, back to the lease this weekend. Mounted the IR Hunter to my trusty 6.8 and got it sighted in...

Stalked some hogs Saturday night around 11:00 pm, but never was able to get a shot on them.. circled around them to a large hay field... No hogs, but there was a coyote following a scent about 50-75 yrds away... took one shot and she went down like a sack of potatoes....

First blood finally! Went back out about 5:30 am.. no varmits, but awesome sunrise!

Very nice. Not sure what load you're using on the hogs but the Hornady Custom 120 grain SST hasn't let me down with the six8.

The 6.8 is the #1 choice for hunting deer and hogs in an AR15

Congrats on the MK II! I think you'll like it. Mine has slayed many hogs and yotes. My favorite thermal scope so far.

6.8 SPC over the 300 BO all day long. The Hornady 120 grain SST is a great round.

Nice to see you reporting in... up

Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.

How far does the MKII detect deer and hogs on a decent thermal weather night (55 degrees, not cloudy or foggy or humid or rainy)?

I can detect hogs and deer pretty easily up to at least 800 yards. It takes a little practice to positively ID what you are looking at but you can easily tell what it is at least 400 yards out, maybe further. For me the most difficult part is judging distance at night.
It's pretty amazing actually how well it works. You can see mice and rabbits a couple hundred yards away.

Congrats. I dumped my 300blk here recently myself. 3 animals and no recovery. Seems to be a niche round. I do like my 6.8spc, but am seriously thinking of going with an AR10 to have to keep less ammo types around the house. What made you choose the IR Hunter over some of the other available thermals out there?

Blue... I originally bought a IR Patrol, thinking I could have the best of both worlds... monocular and then mount it to the rifle when ready to shoot. Turned out to be too much of a hassle. However, the image through the patrol was incredible, so I ended up exchanging the patrol for the MK II, since the image processor was pretty much identical.

I originally started out with an AR-10, but soon got tired of lugging the weight of it around. Give the 6.8 a try, I think you will be very pleased!

This is an interesting topic. I've recently acquired a 300 BLK, with which I've yet to shoot a hog. I plan to use it with my Photon NV Scope, meaning I won't be taking really long shots. I'm hoping it'll work. I too have an AR-10, which knocks 'em dead, but it sure is heavy! As Blue Tick notes, having the AR-10 does simplify things with regard to reloading and ammo inventory.

Hey der... I also have a 16" 300 BO with a photon XT. It was my first night rig (well other than green light) and have killed several hogs and one coyote with it. I guess barrel length made the difference? I guess my 8.5" 300 BO just didnt have enough "umph" to be deadly the two times I used it. Too bad, because I sure liked the overall length and weight of it. What length 300 are you planning on using?

I have a 16" barrel. I didn't build it, Radical Arms near Houston is the manufacturer. I'd just say it's nothing special, although it does seem to be put together well — it has basic components with a decent hand guard. Sighted it in last week, getting three shots in maybe a 1.75" circle at 100 yards. That's as well as I can do, can't blame the rifle for not doing better, particularly since at the present time I have an EoTech 512 red dot sight on it. aim Looking forward to trying it out. Most of my night shots are certainly less than 100 yards, 60-70 is probably typical.
