I just now am getting in to hunting and just today got my license to hunt on lake lavon. Although since i am in college i dont have all that much money to spend on gear. So i guess my question is, what essentials should i have in order to go hog hunting (i already have my guns).

Hunting alone or with someone?
Share cost on equipment. Light (night hunt-red or green, mounted on gun or handheld)
Snake gators - this time of year
Night vision or thermal (night)
Good knife

Welcome to the addiction of hog hunting.

I have killed more hogs in a cameo shirt, blue jeans and boots than with scent cover and camo'd out. My best advice is find an experienced hunter with you and learn all you can.

If you are going to keep the meat invest in a good knife sharpene to carry with you.

Good luck on the hunting.

Most the essentials have been covered except maybe a compass or your phone so you don't get lost, the other stuff is just bonus or fun. Get out and enjoy it, you will figure the rest out in time. That is part of the fun up

good advice. when you get out there and NEED something and you don't have it you learn to bring it next time.

txshntr makes a great point. I'm an older, experienced hunter. I have a pretty good sense of direction. Have hunted in several states, been on mountain hunts for elk and have always gotten back to camp.

This last deer season I shot a nice sow before dark. After finding a pitiful blood trail I started searching down the split off trails until I found the glowing Nocturnal about 100 or more yards from the feeder. The pig went another 100 or so yards before expiring.

There was no moon that evening. I fortunately had gone to get my cart before starting the blood trail and had a good light and my drag so I started back down the blood trail towards my stand. Until I got to the arrow still glowing. Before that I couldn't see a blood trail to back track on. So I went in the direction I thought the stand was in. Dragging a 120lb pig through the live oak thickets it's easy to get off track in the dark. However, at one point too hot and tired to drag her any further, I pulled out my compass and took a bearing then walked out to within 30 yards of my cart. Then I used my compass to meander through the oaks to wind up close enough to find my arrow I left stuck in the ground by my pig.

Having a good compass and knowing how to use it can save your life. Or at the least a lot of extra wandering around.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Yup...need a compass, and even when you disagree with it on direction, the compass is always right. Get a good one with luminous face and pointer.

Other things needed:

Toilet paper - good for marking trail and 'other' uses
Skeeter dope
Extra batteries for the flashlight

And something else that has come in handy often for finding pigs (and deer) in fading light is my rangefinder. Use it to range from your blind to where the critter was. Walk to where you think the critter was and range back to where you shot from. It really speeds up finding the blood trail if you are standing where the critter was.
