I had heard about this but was waiting on the details. Holy moly. A Connecticut state trooper was down here in Texas to hunt with friends when he was killed by buddy from Maine. You always wonder how this stuff comes about. Well, the group thought they were on a hog and the trooper, dressed in dark clothing, attempted to flush a boar while on his hands and knees going under a fence, was mistaken for the hog, and was shot. Had he been a hog, placement would have been appropriate, but he was a person. http://www.penbaypilot.com/article/updat...ident-won/65734Sounds like a lot of mistakes all the way around. Holy Moly.

I can't even imagine having to go through that. Sad deal all the way around. Sounds like the shooter killed a friend. Ugh. I am not sure I could live with that guilt.

That is unbelievably bad! My daddy taught me years ago (as one of those 9-year-olds with a .22 rifle) to NEVER shoot if you weren't ABSOLUTELY SURE of your target and that it was something that you intended to kill. Also, don't think I would ever get on my hands and knees, in the dark with hogs nearby. Very sad, but especially for the son that was along on the trip.

Tough deal and still a lot of questions... Yeah, but since they won't be pressing charges, I doubt there will be anymore information on this event that comes to light. I think this was the public announcement and that will likely be all the information that will come forth. Not to dwell on such terrible events, but this is definitely something that can be learned from to help preclude future events...

Sad all around for sure - but entirely preventable. I'm sure all realize the obvious, that's why no charges. Huge prices paid all around by everyone involved already.

Prayers for families... Know person accidently shot during deer hunt on public land, & was with me pard when he accidently shot lhimself during our fastdraw days... Humbling experiancs... Accidents happen... My night hunts were solo, had 1,100 acres, twas before the NV & Thermal craze... Have said it before & say it again i don't recomend the way i used ta hunt ... i was sure of my Target before pulling hammer back, close range... Same as when hunting WMA in thick stuff... Grew up hunting corn fields, hunting parties pudding on slow drives & taught at young age, value of shooting lanes ... Never been scared on me hog hunts, twice had hogs charge, 1st was sow protecting babies, 2nd had ta side step... & have gone inta some thick stuff after wounded hogs, during day & night... What scares me tis hunters scared of hogs ... Stay safe, wear Orange on public hunts.. keep your head held high & your powder dry... Stay Safe for high-tech NV & Thermal making it safer for night hunts... postage payed caveman

Tough deal and still a lot of questions... Not to dwell on such terrible events, but this is definitely something that can be learned from to help preclude future events... Exactly, a lot of folks could learn from this. It doesn't mention a scope on the rifle and it was still light enough to see well. The guy was in his 70's. How was his eyesight? Was he shooting iron sights? And on and on... Prayers for all....

""At the scene, Chase told law enforcement that while hunting, he shot at a wild hog and accidentally struck Davis. Chase further stated he approached Davis and noticed he was on his hands and knees on the ground, according to the Sheriff’s Office""
Bad deal, extra bad when confirmation of target would have avoided this all together. Wonder if it was mistaken target identity, or there was actually a hog between the 2 hunters? In any case, terrible thing to have to live with.

I'm guessing he still didn't have his mind around the fact it wasn't really a hog he was shooting at.....

Sad deal. Not the first time this has happened though. Something similar happened in Medina County a few years ago now.

Or you could go, have fun, but take a sec to be sure of what you are shooting at.

One of those really painful life lessons: once you pull the trigger, you OWN that bullet until it stops. I used to take safety for granted, but have really changed my thinking in recent years. As others have said, sad deal all around.

As others have said, sad deal all around. So true, and I would like to add some of my dad's logic here. He would have said, "if another guy mistakes you for a hog, who pays the price for the mistake?" You can say they both paid a price, but that check wasn't split 50/50.

That is a terrible tragedy, all involved have my sympathy, that said I have seen and guided inexperienced (to the area) hunters do some dangerous and stupid stuff. The shooter did not positively identify his target a tragic lesson here for everyone.

It's a lesson to us all. It's better to go overboard with safety and have your hunting parner go home thinking you're too careful than to not go home at all. Always, always know where your hunting partner is and what is behind where you're shooting. With land being split into smaller pieces, this will increaingly be a risk.
