Looking for some schooling on revolvers. I've never had one, but My FIL passed last year and this was his pistol. He bought it new in early 60's and it doesn't look like it's been shot much. I absolutely love the smooth trigger and it doesn't take much at all to pull it when it's cocked back.

It says 38 S&W Special CTG on the barrel. Does that mean it can shoot normal 38 Special rounds? Thinking prob not the +P's.

How would you compare this gun to the new DA wheel guns of today...I've heard "they don't make'em like they used too", but how were things different back then? I would think technology would get better with time. thanks for your help!




Last thing is the firing pin on the hammer wiggles just a bit and rocks back and forth. I'm guessing that's normal?

Ha Ha, yes its normal. You have inherited a very fine, classic revolver. Yours is what is called "pinned" the small "pin" on the top strap. More valuable.

38 Special ammo, all will be safe to shoot in your gun. I would not suggest a steady diet of +p ammo though. Yours is a famous "K" frame.

Model 10-2, not for sure but I would guess your gun was born in the 60's or 70's??

It appears that your gun was made in 1961. As a general rule, any K frame S&W with a model number is safe with +P ammo, but they were not rated as such until the 10-6. That was the Model in production when +P ammo was introduced, remember the Model 19 357, is essentially the same gun. Smith changed the hardening process on the frames about the same time they went to model nubers.

These are outstanding revolvers. Untold 100s of thousands served the Countries Police Departments. A Model 10 is safe with +P ammo. The sights are regulated for 158 grain round nose lead so the "faster" ammo takes some Kentucky windage. These started out as the Military & Police Model around 1899 also know as the Hand Ejector. The floating firing pin feature has been around forever and just in the last few years has it been changed to a frame affixed firing pin. I occasionally fire +Ps in my K Frame Smith's but really enjoy shooting standard velocity 148 grain wadcutters & 158 semi wadcutters. Enjoy your treasure sir.

Charles is correct. I bought a model 66, 3" barrel, yes 3" barrel, for $350. It was a LE turn in, gun was in great shape. Like a dummy, I had it all Cerakoted.....I also added the Crimson Trace grips...it was a real tack driver
