Never thought I'd have this problem, I usually know what I want and try to keep it simple. But I have a new custom action coming my way soon and I have no idea what I want. I want long range capabilities and a good hunting rifle, prob 50/50 mix. I want another 300wm, but also a 6.5creedmor, but I like short actions so there's also the 300wsm. I currently have a 22-250,223, 243, 308, 270, 30-06 (aka Walmart calibers).

I'd seriously look at the 6.5 if it were mine.

Those sound like good suggestions.

I'll toss in 325WSM, a short action cartridge that comes amazingly close to the Remington 8mm mag in performance.

Kind regards, charlesb

Short Action

6.5 x 47
6.5 Creedmoor
7mm-08 (maybe A.I., dee is the man to pm)

Long Action

Not another 300 WM if you have one
7 Rem Mag loaded with 180's
28 Nosler loaded with 195's (be my pick)
6.5-06 (has my attention, 26 Nosler is a barrel burner)

I've always wanted to do the 7-08, so that would be my pick.

Don't currently have a 300wm, had one and liked it, but somebody paid me too much for it so I let it go.

Will have to research some of the calibers being mentioned

6.5 wsm sounds interesting if you reload (300wsm necked down to 6.5). Not sure you would gain anything tangible over the 6.5 creedmore which has plenty of factory ammo and brass available.

Anything in 6.5mm would be my choice. I love the 3 that I shoot - 6.5 Creedmoor,260 Remington,6.5-06.

If you go 6.5 get the best 6.5 cartridge you can get, which I think is the 6.5 SLR.

It only gives you 60ft/s over a creedmoor.

Now if you want a stud 6.5 with 308 type barrel life, the 6.5 SAUM is ticket.

I would vote for 7mm-08 or 25-06 but I'm a big fan of those calibers

You guys are the reason I can't buy 6.5 bullets (just kidding) 6.5 is a good caliber especially if you handload.

Wait, how is something that is pushing 140gr pills at over 3100 fps going to have the same barrel life as a .308, when even slower cartridges like 6.5CM, 6.5-06, and 6.5x284 probably won't make it above 3k rounds without accuracy degradation?

Love my 6.5x284. Tack driver with Chad's 120 grain Barnes TTSX. I am a hunter, not a paper puncher, so that barrel will outlive me.

If I had to pick only 1 caliber I could shoot from now on, without hesitation it would be 300 WM. It will do everything you need, and then some. Push a Hornady 225 BTHP, Berger 230 Hybrid, or the newer Hornady ELD bullets, and you are good to 1 mile+. But, a 300 WM pushes back pretty hard in recoil also, so it depends on what kind of rifle and set up you plan for.

When I pick a new caliber, I work the problem backwards. I select which bullet I want to shoot, and how fast I want this bullet to go. Then I look at what cartridges will do this. My latest build I am doing right now is a 300 Win Mag necked down to 7mm to shoot the new Berger 195 Hybrids about 3000 fps. This 7mm 195 Hybrid is a total game changer when it comes to high BC. I have to play with this bullet.

It's hard to beat the 6.5mm when it comes to speed, drop, wind drift, low recoil, with good barrel life. The 6.5 CM, 260 Rem, and my favorite 6.5x47 Lapua. They are easy to shoot and easy to load for.

On a strange note, the 325 WSM is a VERY efficient caliber. As far as "gas mileage" goes, it gets the most speed for the lowest amount of powder. For this reason, I have always wanted to build a 338 WSM. I am not a WSM fan, but this round has me scratching my head.

Caliber selection is a personal choice, and it's hard for someone to pick it for you. Everything in shooting is a compromise, and only you can figure out what you are willing to compromise.

The obvious choice is the .338-06. smile
