Between the .45 ACP and the 9MM, through a hi grade match barrel.
Which one would be better for 50-100yrds shooting at steel targets.
What bullet choices?

9mm would be my thought. Lighter and faster. I've shot 357sig at 100yds. Took a few shots to find my hold

I don't own anything less powerful than .45acp.
If I was going to shoot steel, I'd choose the .44 mag. Out of your two choices, the 9 will shoot flatter

Both can work, haven't shot steel that far with those but have shot 20oz drink bottles with both, took several shots to find the hold point in the front sight.

I was shooting bricks with my 9mm Colt 1991 on Friday out to 50 yards without much trouble at all. My colt 1911s in both 45 and 9mm I could hit a man sized steel target without much trouble, but I am not that great of a shot with a pistol to begin with. I have a small steel bunny target I like to shoot at, and I can shoot real close to that at 100 yards without much trouble. I am sure a competent pistol shooter wouldn't have much trouble with either 45 or 9mm.

I can consistently hit steel poppers and 6-8" plates out to about 110 yards with my M&P 45 with an Apex FSS trigger. Also did it with another M&P pro 9mm with an Apex FSS trigger and it was definitely faster. Sometimes a low hit on the poppers with the 9mm wouldn't knock them down and the 45 usually would even with a low hit. In the 45 I was shooting handloads (IIRC 5gr Bullseye/230gr LRN Bayou Bullets) and in the 9mm I'm pretty sure it was Freedom Munitions 115gr FMJ.

You'd be surprised how much fun it is to shoot pistols at that distance. It is certainly humbling- we shoot feed sacks after filling feeders and it takes a shot or mag or two to find the hold. I have a lot of respect for guys that can shoot big bore revolvers at range.

The 9mm would shoot flatter, especially at the javelina distance of 100 yards.

like others have said both will work but the 9mm will shoot a little flatter. lately I've been really interested in long range hangunning with the goal of doing some hunting with one. couple weeks back I took my Ruger 5 shot Bisley out to the 100 yard line to see what I could do. my first group put four out of five rounds on the paper plate with the fifth round going high and to the left. all five rounds measured 12 1/2" with the four on the plate measuring 6 1/2". I really wanted all five shots on the plate so I tried once more and was able to do so. this group measured 8" the load I was shooting was a 350 grain RFN Gas check over a decent charge of Lil Gun in starline 45 Colt Brass. Chronograph says i'm in the 1150FPS range. now I need to find some hogs.

Ive shot 40sw quite a bit for fun out to a hundred and could hit a 24" square plate easily once i got hold over down, calm days. 357 sig amazed me at 100yds even in wind.

I used to use a merit optical attachment to help out at the longer distances.

thanks! I made the grips. they're English walnut. I also smoothed the action out, installed a wolff spring kit and made the front sight.
