With this scope on 1 power can you see the cross hairs and target with both eyes open like a red dot scope. I always, in my mind, thought of a red dot as zero power. On 1 power with this Leupold is there any magnification at all?
The few red dot scopes that I have had could be used with both eyes open. My vision would simply blur out the tube. It was I guess about like a "heads up display".

I don't think it's a true 1x, more like 1.25x. I really doubt your going to be walking among the hogs close enough to use co-witness. I could be wrong though. Should work great "close one eye" and choot-em on the move scope It may even co-witness for you, depends on how your vision works. I feel like I can co-witness a little higher than 1x, but that's just walking with the weapon, I don't really practice cqb.

I have the patrol and yes you can shoot it with both eyes open on the lowest magnification.
Btw, think of multiplication. X0 is zero. X1 is itself.

Leupold has two different ones, a VX 1-4, and a VX-R 1.25-4. If I got one it would be the basic one.
I'm just considering replacing one of my red dots with this. It is certainly a higher quality optic than what I have. And I figure I can sight it in tighter as well.

If you look at the specifications the basic 1x4 VX-Hog is really 1.4x4.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

The more I look at that reticle the less I like it. There is just too much going on in there for my liking.
What I'm trying to accomplish is a highly reliable, very low power scope, without a battery and electronics that could fail, that isn't a bazillion dollars, with the quality and a warranty like Leupold. Any ideas?
So far a VX-III 1.5-5 x 20 may be about all I want to spend. I just don't want to drop a ton of money on a scope, but also think a quality tube can be bought for about what I want to spend.

You'll be much happier with a 1-4x. Have you looked into the MTAC?

You'll be much happier with a 1-4x. Have you looked into the MTAC? No, but have looked at the Leupold with the illuminated reticle. I like the idea of cross hairs even if the light goes out. I do like Burris equipment as well. I have a Fullfield II that I think I bought for semi-cheap many years back that is still on the money. Thanks for the suggestion! EDIT: There sure seems to be a lot of Vortex fans. I just looked at a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 with illuminated reticle. Looks like can only get down to 1 power in the Burris or Vortex. I'm a huge Leupold fan, but need to open my eyes to change. Illuminated Leupold or Burris or Vortex?

I'm not a Vortex fan.
Do you want the scope to make things look smaller?? 1x is zero magnification... The same as iron sights or a red dot.

You'll be much happier with a 1-4x. Have you looked into the MTAC? +1 on mtac i have it and am pretty fast with it. Also i can ring steel a ways out there with the reticle it has. Id say im as fast as with my eotech or aimpoint. The viper pst 1-4 is awesome as well. I have both and cant decide which one i prefer more. I had a bushnell ffp 1-4 with cat tail and other than weight to my eyes it was comparable glass at a good bargain i got mine for 179.00 on salr at palmetto. I cant seem to get a group under .9" with any 1-4 power but thats not why i bought them. All have reticle thatll show non illuminated well. As far as most prevision the viper pst reticle takes it hands down

The firedot illuminated reticle on Leupolds is killer for night time and low light shooting. I have a Mark AR with the firedot and love it for night time hunting.

I think most scopes advertised as 1x have a little magnification. It is my understanding(I could be wrong) that it is quite a bit more expensive to make a variable power scope with true 1x.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.
