I use black oil sunflower seeds. Always put the trap on the picnic table, sprinkle the seeds all around and inside. Even though the birds love the seeds, I have caught many squirrels, never caught a bird.

Wipe peanut butter on the trunk of a tree about 4' above the ground on the side facing a good shooting spot then grab the pellet gun and hammer away....

I've been using shell on roasted peanuts. Caught 13 so far in the past month and half. Have caught a couple of birds, just reset trap and try again.
Also have a Large Rat trap screwed to the tree baited with peanut butter, only get one every so often on this one.

use peanut butter on the bottom of the trap pan, squirrels can smell it.

Since what you are trying isn't working maybe change your technique, try catching just birds and maybe the squirrels will be attracted.... Hope you get some and post what worked.

Try an overhead cover. A piece of plywood or a couple of slanted boards so that birds cannot see it overhead.

I've got to start trapping again. I couldn't get them near the trap when the acorns were falling. I used peanut butter smeared on the trap plate last year and caught 7...never caught a bird.

Not sure what the issue is, caught two more squirrels in the past couple of days. So far 15 for about month and half of trapping. Strictly using shell in roasted peanuts( unsalted). Only 2 birds caught that I remember, both released unharmed.
Might try setting up a bird feeder on the opposite side of the yard and see if that helps.
