I would go with the 3.5-14x40 rarely would you need more than 14 I don't ever turn mine past 12. It normally stays at 10. Nikon is putting some real good glass on the market, you won't be disappointed. I'm personally not big on the mil dot but some love it.

I usually leave mine in the 12 area. I guess what im asking is how is the glass on the prostaff 5? How do the coatings do when light or weather changes? Do these track well. And is there a comparable scope for the money. I can get the 3.5x for $263 otd new.
Only nikons i have are an older monarch ucc which i like, and older prostaff

I haven't had it fog up before but I've never had it put on a rainy day. It does pretty darn well in low light. Haven't had to track an animal with any speed but I imagine it would do well. We paid about that for the wife prostaff 3 a while back and it was worth it. Although I think my prostaff 5 is better.

Had a Nikon 4.5-18 and found the eye box was so touchy at max power I never turned it past 16. Also the scope light gathering capability severely suffered at higher power....got rid of it.
