Looking for female chocolate lab pup, 8 weeks or younger. Looking to spend @ $350.
Will be duck dog so parent(s) need to hunt. Willing to travel all @ Texas, OK, or AR to pick up.

I take it you're not looking for any health clearances?

Although I understand why people get them done, I will take my chances, so no health clearances are not manditory. If issues arise I will deal with them, dogs with issues need homes too. I also have no intentions on breeding her.

I've heard really good things about Tioga Angie, just curious about the clearances or do you have a puppy in mind for me? Thanks.

It was an easy assumption to make given your price. No one doing the proper health clearances can afford to sell puppies for that price. OFA's CNM, EIC, blood work and stud fee. The numbers don't work. Just remember price of the dog is the cheapest part.

Wise post here. I just put a deposit down on a litter for about 5X of what I thought I'd ever spend on a dog. blush

Wasnt really asking Angie if she had one of her dogs for me, just that maybe she knew someone else that maybe had any avaiable pups in my range and complimenting her business. You cant hardly say lab breeder without spending a mininum of $800 + and even those typically dont have health certs and usually come with short guaranties. There is no shortage of breeders out there and apparently these dogs are in very high demand because they have no problems getting rid of them.

I doubled my initial amount and am still way down on the wish list at most of these places and I cant justify spending that much money and not getting pick of the litter.

Barney,

Care to share who you put down deposit with?

I think I have found my pup and hopefully pic her up next weekend.

I ran into the same thing. I thought I was going to stay under $1000. Boy was I in for a shock. This will be my 3rd lab, and I know enough now to know exactly what I want from a dog. I was looking at a minimum a sire with a HRCH title as well as the dam with health certs and characteristics I wanted in a dog......clean in a kennel, steady at the line, quiet, high energy, but with an off switch at the house. I wasn't finding much under $1250.

Not at all. I started out wanting a black male and ran across a litter I couldn't pass up for a little more money than the range I described above. I decided to put a deposit down on "Gump" X "Mocha" litter from Champion Retrievers out of Pineville, LA.

http://www.retrievertraining.net/forums/showthread.php?122055-%28LA%29-GRHRCH-UH-quot-Gump-quot-MH-MNH4**-x-GRHRCH-Mocha-MH-MNR

Further down the list than I'd like on that litter, but if it doesn't workout I put a deposit down on this litter as well:

Luxy is the daughter to Dude which currently holds the record for the most GRHRCH passes at 18.

I got an e-mail this week about a litter of puppies from my CPA. Look to be really solid dogs, but he only has yellow and black males left.

Thanks. Man that Gump is one bad sob. Good luck with what ever pup you end up with, dont think you can go wrong either way.

Lesson I've learned is definetely plan way ahead when looking for a pup.
I have a few traits I'm looking for as well and of course after all the research, calls, and text after finding a couple I liked and thought would be good fit they tell ya your 5th on the list for a choc female.

Almost best to just pick out a dam and sire you know will eventually have a litter and be patient.... That and send in your deposit asap.

That is because there is no shortage of uneducated people willing to spend money on a pup. Just look at the ads in this forum. No pedigrees even posted and nothing about health. It boggles the mind.

I would say $1000 can get you a nice pup out of a nice breeding (titled) with health clearances and a good guarantee. It's worth the extra $250. However, if you found a pup your happy with, I'm glad and hope it works out well for you.

My point about the dog price was just that I think it's worth it to maximize what you can reasonable afford for the pup. When you think about the years you are committing and all the expense that will go in (if in fact you train the pup, which I assume you intend to) a few hundred dollars is chump change in comparison.

Barney, nice breeding. Enjoy the journey with your new pup. Don't worry about the pick. Plenty of FC's out there that were last pick.

Thanks. Not after a FC. Just hoping I can get to the HRCH and MH levels. Anything past that is gravy. up

Im actually between 2 litters at the moment depending on how some things go, but they are all already spoken for.

You looking for one? If so pm me or let me know and I can probably point you in a good direction.
Bet Ive talked with 30 folks between the breeders, individuals, and guys who have had past pups out of litters im interested in.

There is some very solid pups out there or on their way shortly on the low end of the cost scale and most of them only go off word of mouth.
