Anyone using the 300 Lb Protein Feeder. Based on web search, it seems to be one of the better ones. Would appreciate any comments good or bad on them.

Nothing wrong with it other than size capacity. If you have a lot of deer at the location you are going to use it at, it will need to be checked once per week or so. If it were me, I would buy as large of feeder as I could afford so I do not have to fill it once a month or 6 weeks. You don't have to fill it, but having the capacity when you finally need it will be beneficial.

One thing many people don't know: most feeders out there are rated in Corn weight. Protein, being less dense, takes up more space per lb. I've found the ratio to be something like .85 or .9 depending on the brand of feed. So, a 300lb feeder will actually probably only hold ~270lb of protein.

Agree with STX, try to buy a larger feeder if you can afford it to avoid having to fill it all the time. You can find 400lb actual-capacity protein feeders for about the same cost as that ASF 300.

I would look for something in the 600lb range or larger. Brand doesn't really matter when it comes to free choice. Just depends on whether they can/will eat out of it.

Thanks for the comments. Understand about size. I visit my hunting lease once a month to check on status of feeders, camera, Travel Trailer & blinds. Hopefully, the 300 lb feeder will be sufficient. Recommendations on type/content of Protein would be greatly appreciated.

30 days will fine at first but when it gets dry and deer are hitting your feeder really well, 30 days will not be soon enough. 12 deer eating 2#/hd/day will not last but 11 days. Your 300# will not hold but 270# more or less a couple of pounds. 5 deer eating 2#/hd/day will empty it in 27 days. Go with a feed that is fresh and readily available. Look at the protein vs. fiber and the mineral package. I like 20% protein with 12% fiber. I like high phosphorous(.90-1.00%) with a good calcium.

I use antlermax... really wouldn't let brand make a difference to you and focus more on a close well ran feed store.. Stanleys has three locations around me one being two miles from the house and known the folks since I was born

1 of my feeders(275# capicity) will last 6-7 days in dry times, that is 275#/week from just that one. I have two more the same size at different locations.

Our average consumption rate floats around 550lb per month per feeder.

I really like the Lyssey and Eckels protein, but not sure if it is available north of Llano. We used to run Record Rack, commonly available. They definitely consume the L&E at a higher rate.

Nav, I remember that set of pics. Did not take them long to figure that feeder out.

First protein feeder I ever bought (around 20 years ago) was from All Seasons. I still use it behind my house with a trail cam to get pictures of my "pet" deer. T
hey do clean it out quick. I use Lyssey and Eckels protein at my deer lease, but here at the house I use Record Rack which is what my local feed store carries.

I wish I still had pics of their first prototype protein feeder I tested in early 90's. It was a 55 gallon drum spin feeder setup with the tall legs. It had a long PVC pipe that had a "T" at the bottom for deer to eat out of. They have came a long way since those days.

I believe Sweeney also had a long tube, long legged spin type protein feeder back in the day of trail cameras with 35mm film! shocked

Yep, they had a protein feeder but with their pricing back then it did not sell. They had one setup to feed deer in the field beside their shop. IIRC it was a 600# model.

I would not go with anything less than 500# that is just my opinion, I don't like filling protein feeders every week.
As far as which brand of protein to feed. Go with what you can afford but you will get what you pay for. I feed Double Down on all of my ranches and I can see the results.
