The chart that Berger Tech Team sent me didn't "copy and paste" very well, but I think you'll be able to figure it out. This is brand new data on their brand new bullet, P/N 27575. G7 BC = .339; G1 BC = .662; optimal twist rate = 1:8

I sure hope barrel makers get on this quick! Meaning build a 1:8 twist .277" to stabilize this bullet. The cartridge with this bullet will be impressive. As I've said for years, the 270 is lacking in the BC department, and that's all. This corrects that. All the guys out there with plenty of .270 brass saved up will be in great shape if they choose to rebarrel.

Also interesting to see 270 load work up done in a 26" barrel only seen that a time or two. Seems to make pretty decent velocity, and you could maybe push it a little harder than they are.

Im assuming h1000 and the like is too slow? or would there potentially be some other powders out there that may perform a little better? Ive thought about rebarelling mine before... although if I go through that it will likely become a 280 AI.

H1000 would work well if you can get enough in the case. The new IMR 7977 should also be a good one.

If someone gets a 1:8" 270 barrel, buzz me for a GREAT price on load work up, since I want to shoot this bullet.

I've tried H4831, and could not get near the speeds as with 4350. With the heavy 170 grain 270 bullet, I'd lean towards H1000 or 7977 also. Seat the bullet out long touching the lands, and go to the range.

I don't have a chronograph, but 4350 has always been my powder of choice for 270 as well.

Right up my alley. Liking this idea so far.

How many people are going to have, or order, a barrel suitable for this bullet chambered for .270 Winchester?

I would imagine most people willing to do this will have a larger case in mind.

My problem is I am already building a rifle to shoot the new 7mm 195 Hybrid's (300 Win Mag necked down to 7mm). So, as much as I love the 270, I don't see playing with this bullet much. But I'd like to try it in someone's rifle for sure!

It is exciting to have more options, though, and I love to see the BC envelope pushed.

I have asked E.R. Shaw and Shilen about building 1:8 for a Savage in .270 Winchester. Shaw just got back to me and told me that they will only make the barrel in the standard, 1:10 twist. No word from Shilen, but I'll share whatever information I get from them.

Call Bartlein or Kreiger. Those guys have a digital cut rifling barrel machine to make any twist they want. What would be sweet, is a gain twist starting at about 10" or so, and finishing up about 8".

Thanks, Chad. I contacted Brux and K&B, and it looks like they will build the right barrel for a bit less than $300. I'll check out Bartlein and Kreiger to hear what they have to say. I probably won't go with a gain twist approach, but it is interesting!

Bartlein and Kreiger will both build just about any barrel you want. Their prices are higher, and the turnaround times are longer, but you can get 'er done with these folks.

Sorry to wake up an old thread, but I just found this Berger round a few weeks ago and got really excited about it. I talked to Bartlein and Kreiger about a 1 in 8" and to Chad about loads last week, but really wanted to make sure my current action would handle the OAL before going too crazy.

I'll preface this with saying I only have a limited understanding of reloading, as I've never actually done it myself. But I get the gist of ogive, lands and COAL.

I talked to Berger to find out what the recommended jump would be and they said .015 off the lands is ideal. So starting there, I received my OAL gauge and shiny new box of berger 170 EOLs today and started taking measurements.

My go to factory hornady 130 superperf SSTs are 3.218 OAL. This bullet touches the lands at 3.415. the 130 SST has been so great, I was very surprised to learn that my current jump is .197. anyway. To compare the 170

The COAL with the berger 170 touching the lands is 3.560. So ideally loading at 3.545 (according to berger). I made up a dummy bullet and surprisingly, even tho it wont go into the action sideways, it does fit in my Sako AV Mag at that length. I dont actually have a mag, its the hinged floorplate and spring.

Here's a picture of the difference in the two dummy cartridges. I think this gives me enough info to seriously consider a re-barrel job. If you guys see something that I missed, or have suggestions, please let me know. I think this little projectile potentially changes the game for some folks favorite cartridge, as long as they dont mind a barrel swap.

Thanks!

That's about what I figured. I knew it would have to be seated out pretty long. Push it with some H1000 or Retumbo, or something in the similar powder burn speed, and you'll be good. I have loaded some 165 Matrix bullets for a few shooters in the 270 Win. This is similar to that bullet when it comes to powders and loads. It should be a good one for the 270 Win!!

Thanks Chad. Dont know why I didnt post up this seat depth pic earlier. But with a .151 difference (Berger Tech Teams's OAL was 3.394, mine 3.545), you might get enough of the h1000 in there to pick up some speed. Is that enough neck to get a good grab?

Yeah, that looks great. My rule of thumb is I need at least 1/2 (or more) of bullet diameter to grab the bullet in the case mouth. The 270 has a long neck, so you should be good there. Run a magnum primer (Fed 215 would be ideal) for the slow powder, and it should help.

Old thread, but I thought I would update.

Finally got my new barrel put on, and worked up a load. These things look real good, even out of a 270 Winchester. Running them about 2850 over 58.1 grains of H1000 through a 26" kreiger 1 in 8". 60.2gr also looked good, and would like to push them at 3000fps but 58.1 was magic for me at a 3.461 COAL (-.004 off the lands). Ran 2 load ladders at 900 yards and am seeing less than 3" of vertical dispertion. Just got back from the range, and shot this 5-shot group at 100. The Bergers sure are picky about seating depth. .005 Jam sprayed all over, where as just touching to .004 jump was great. Then it opened back up until about .060 jump. Anyway, awesome bullet, and a lot of fun to shoot.
