What do I do with 2 or 3 acres of turnips? This photo shows more turnips than I've eaten in my life...

Same here. We have turnips bigger than softballs.

Leave them in the ground and till them in when doing spring plots. Turnips are great at holding the fertilizer during the winter. A ton of northern farms are now growing turnips/radishes in fall to keep their nutrients in the soil. Bad thing is that they stink very bad in early spring when they are rotting.

If they make seed you will not have to replant them for a while.

Thanks for the insight, Pittstate. It's good to hear they have some utility. Would be nice to get some volunteers, STX!

I hope Mr. Oxner chimes in with a recipe...

So, the deer did not eat the turnips? I was thinking about planting some and that the deer would dig them up after the first hard freeze because they have so much sugar in them. Help me to understand if I should plant them with my oats and peas or not.

there was enough green they didn't have too.. in dry years iv watched them paw them out of the ground or just wait for the pigs to root them up and then eat the left overs...

Id run a potato plow through the field and turn them up the last few weeks of season next year if it happens again

When I was planting them in the Hill Country in the early 90's, it took the deer a little time to learn to eat them the first year when I mixed them with oats and clover. When I started planting only PT Turnips and Madrid Clover in the fall plots, the deer ate the tops as soon as it froze once. The next year they ate them as soon as they started to grow really well. Then ate the bulbs after the first of the year. Seen others people plant them and deer would not touch them. Wet or dry, freeze or not they would not touch them.

I guess I will stop looking for the "magic bean" and just stick with my oats and Austrian winter pea mix. They literally eat my plot to the bare ground.

The deer snatched the tops off early on but once the oats and other stuff came on they backed off the turnip tops. I can't tell that any thing has touched the bulb itself. Kind of odd because they've popped up and are sitting above ground with the root holding them in place.

That's what I'm talking about, if it works......Why reinvent the wheel unless it's for fun.

I have never had much luck with Turnips, same with LabLab, but they grew damn good for me. I don't think I gave the LABLAB a fair chance though, should have let it run into lat fall.

It will take them time to figure out what the bulbs are. Fun to watch them eat them once they start on them.

Nice looking plot, hoping to try this myself this year. What was that like a 1 acre plot?

Dang Tye, nice looking food plot. Nice deer too.

Blazing, this plot is just under 2 acres. I have another on about 1.5 acre. Based on my finely tuned 'pace-off' capability...
