I just always used a Zara Spook. Worked great and you can cast em a mile

Shoot bird. Bird fall in water. Throw it beyond the bird and hook the bird's neck. Pull string to bring dead bird back.

we use a top dog as our retriever throw it out behind the bird and pull it back in. works great and some times you can catch a fish as well I caught a 5lb catfish one day while I was trying to catch my bird
