I never thought I would be able to take an Elk in west Texas or have the time to do it but it all worked
out recently. I saw this old bull last season with a slightly bigger frame but with our hunts usually being
trophy hunts only no one was interested in him. I kept an eye out for him late last year but only saw him once
and really thought he had moved out of the area and gone.

A couple of my aoudad hunters tagged out on day 1 so with a few days left we went out looking for Javelina the next day on that ranch.
Well that afternoon Tyler (good friend and guide) says check out all those Elk (about a group of 40) as we were riding around and that old bull
was in the herd about 600 yards off.

Now it was decision time and nerve wrecking. It felt like forever but probably only seconds and one of the aoudad hunters said go Kill
him Mike! Well that was that, we were off on a stalk to get closer and we closed the distance to just over 350 yards and waited
for a clear shot on him and I touched it off. He went down almost immediately and I couldn't believe what just happened.

This old bull was going down hill with nearly no teeth left. For me I would rather have that any day and remember it for the rest of my
life. Now I can scratch a free range west Texas Elk off of my list.

Now to make room in the freezer, and I still haven't told my wife I shot it bolt

Congrats Mike! Did you take it off your ranch south of Van Horn? It's nice to be the hunter instead of the guide now and then.....

Hey guys thank you very much. He is certainly not the biggest but taking an elk in the desert always
was high on my list.
