While dog handling at the South Texas Charity Event held at King Ranch yesterday morning, (Which has morphed into an annual dropped bird hunt in recent years, along with a weekend of fundraising auctions and banquets) we found 5 mature rattlers just in the area I was assigned. There were 10 quail rigs of every description participating...I did not check to see what anyone else found, but with the warm weather as of late, they are crawling. Two snakes were killed at one location, 3 in another. The snakes were all in close proximity to each other. Be Aware, and Be Careful!

I've seen a total of 5 in my 50 years of quail hunting in Texas. I don't worry about them much until I see one, then I shoot my way back to the truck and call it a day. I shoot the ground and take a step.

We killed 2 massauga rattlers opening weekend, and a prairie rattler west of Hereford halfway through pheasant season. I've had 2 strike at me without rattling over the years in Kansas, and a couple more during dove season here. **** down both legs every time... A vet told me to keep Benadryl and epi-pens on hand in case a dog gets bit, so I have ever since. Knock on wood I haven't had a dog hit yet, But the last I heard it cost about $1500 for antivenin treatment...

We've been catching them quite a bit lately. I actually just put together a video of my dad and brother doing some rattlesnake hunting. They do it every year for the rattlesnake derby.

I've never seen one while hunting. Hope it stays that way.

Normally not until late feb-March. But they have been bringing quite a few home the last couple weeks. This is the first year that they've started this early. The first part of the video where they caught 6 was just last week.

There are weather events that start south texas snakes moving. Watch it on balmy days preceding a front. Really gets the snakes moving. Watch out for indigo snakes and coachwhips. They often start moving before the rattlers as they are snake predators and are able to handle a greater temperature range than other snakes. If we start seeing indigos and coachwhips we pick up the dogs and go for a beer.

I have had 2 lab's hit by prairie rattlers in New Mexico. First one no big deal just antibiotics, second was $1,600 and 2 nights at the vet. Unfortunately with more rain comes more rodents hence more snakes. I kill every rattlesnake I see. Hate them things, realmad
