Whats yalls opinion? Always had a 26" bbl for this round, but i want a handier rifle and leaning to 22". Will run 1-8" twist for 69gr thru 90gr. Is it giving up to much velo?

Depends on how much velocity I was willing to give up.

I figure real world maybe 100fps to 150fps, 22" vs 26". im thinking with powders we have today not much of an issue, but thought id ask around and get some thf input/knowledge.

Just looked at this with Quickload and load of H4350 38.4gr powder for max load with a 80gr Nosler Custom competition bullet

22 inch barrel 3205fps
26 inch barrel 3335fps

So according to it the figure above of 100 to 150fps sounds about right.

I was thinking about the same thing today, chopping 6 inches off my 22-250 to 20 inches. It's a 1:12 twist, shoots 55gr just fine but wasn't sure if it would grossly affect it

It will handle nicer and be louder. There being no free lunch, the performance will suffer to some extent.

How the looks will be effected will depend on the gun.

The higher velocity 22 varmint rounds like 220 Swift and 22-250 are not ideal candidates for barrel-shortening, most people go to those cartridges in the quest for the highest possible velocity. For this reason, re-sale value for the rifle is likely to be adversely affected.

In my experience, shortening and re-crowning a rifle barrel usually but not always leads to improved accuracy. Sometimes the accuracy improvement is dramatic. It's hard to say though if that improvement comes from the barrel harmonics changing, or from the benefit to be enjoyed from re-crowning. - Or both!

I've been happy with the guns that I have shortened. To me, the improved handling stands out as being where I see the most improvement. In some cases the difference has been like night and day.

My 220 has a 22 inch barrel (or is it 20 inches) and it's for handling purposes. I had it done about 25 years ago. I figure I'm giving up about 100 fps, which puts me at 22-250 levels. Back then, I didn't know about fast twist, so I'm at a 1 in 14 twist. Super accurate rifle.

As for it being louder, that's hard to say. What I can say is that the muzzle flash (4064 powder) of the 220 is nowhere near the flash I get with the 223 (H335).

I liked the short barrel on the 220 so much that my 260 and 223 also have short barrels.

As for resale value, who cares?

Well, I did exactly that last year. I had a 26", 1:8" twist Shilen stainless select match on a Savage action I was using for my coyote rifle. Then I got into the suppressor thing, and had it chopped and threaded at 22" by Jon Beanland. I shot it like that for a while during my wait time for the form-4, then shot it with a SiCo Harvester for a while. I really liked it with the 22" barrel because it was a really heavy rifle to begin with, and chopped down it handled a whole bunch better. Losing the velocity didn't change the way it hammered coyotes at all.

That Shilen barrel was super accurate, both before and after it was cut. But the rifle never was very fast, even as a 26", due to some really crappy extraction with that Savage action. I lost about 100 FPS with either the 69 TMK or the 75 AMAX when I chopped it. Eventually I parted out that rifle and sold the pieces to fund a different one because I got so tired of the action issues. In its place I now shoot a Remington 700 ADL in 243, with the barrel cut to 21", shooting the 87 VMAX as my calling rifle. I am very happy with it.

I still have that Shilen barrel and will probably sell it here pretty soon. Super accurate, and just has about 300 rounds down it. I think it would have had good velocity too, just not in that action. The extraction on it was out of time and I just couldn't get it working to my satisfaction.

It will be a slow flowing turd cutting it down that short.

Ive run the 22-6 ai and its pretty smiliar ballistics. Ive had that in 24" and it ran pretty good velo wise.
