Finally got everything back from the coaters, so got her put together earlier this week and made it out to the range to warm it up. Nine shots to dial it in and a 3 shot group for a total of 12 shots through through this barrel so far. Three shot group measured 3/4" left to right and about 1/2" top to bottom. Not too shabby. That was with Hornady GMX factory ammo. I have 100 rounds of load development rounds that I need to wade through. Wind was blowing the chronograph around so didn't mess with any of that...

That fluting is Cool! Is the brake part of the barrel or is it machined to perfectly matched? Nice shooting!

The brake is integral to the barrel. 23" of barrel, plus the muzzle brake. Built it for a pronghorn/blind rifle, wouldn't make a bad mountain type rifle, but would need a different stock, the laminate weighs in at 4.5 lbs all by itself and it hasn't been bedded yet. Would be really easy to shave 2-2.5 pounds with even a middle of the road composite. Weighing in at 11.5 with the scope as it sits.

Just curious, if you have 100 rounds of load dev rounds, what exactly are you trying with some many rounds?

Don't have any really good pics.

As far as the loads, I got bored waiting for it to get back from the coaters (3 months), so I loaded up 5 Rounds with 2-3 different powders, usually with 2-3 different load weights for each powder, with Hornady SSTs (129 and 140) and Barnes TTSX 100grn And LRX. Powders include 4350, Superformance, and CFE 223. Would really like to get some Ramshot Hunter, but it seems to me I have a better chance of finding a unicorn in my backyard.

Good luck with your build. I love my 6.5 CM and it's a pleasure to shoot. I loaded up some hand loads ( 130 grain accubonds, 42 grains of reloader 17 ) and my rifle shot them very well. I tried some factory loads and it shot the Hornady 120 grain A-Max ok but it really loved the 140 grain Amax factory loads. Not better than the hand loads but just as well. After I finish sooting the rest of the handloads I'm going to be shooting the 140 Amax exclusively. Great round IMHO.

I've got the ELD-X 143's on the way too. Basically just want a good load for each of them. But figure I'll shoot the heavier bullets more often.

How do you feel about the scale laser-checkering? I've been interested in it for some time, but haven't tried it yet.

Kind regards, charlesb

I like it. I'm torn between whether I like it or the laser stipling on my Whele more. Both make for interesting and different looks.

Probably a little late but if all the 6.5 bullets I've used(amax, vld, SST, scener,ABLR) in my CM the ABLR has been the best combo long range and on game performance.

I don't like wood stocks but that is super cool. Congrats on a nice rifle!

Thanks guys, yeah, I think I'll pick up some 142 grain Accubonds when/if I can find some and compare to the ELD's. Technically BC is higher in the AB.

Rifle started out life as a Stevens 200 chambered for 7mm-08. Just got I in my mind to switch it to something different. Barrel is from ER Shaw, Boyd's coyote laminate stock, Timney trigger set at ~2.5 pounds, Barret Bronze cerakote.

Lawdy, that is nice! up

I came this close to getting a 6.5 CM a year ago and slightly regret not doing so, but we are selling our house on 33 acres and I will lose my shooting range. So the fun factor would have gone down some. Seeing a post like this just brings back the want.

Going to the range today to find out what my laundry list of loads can do. Should be somewhere around 2700fps, hopefully.

Work got in the way of the range trip, but did manage to get to the gun show and pick up some 142 grain ABLR's. .710 BC, pretty excited about them. Hopefully they group along with the Hornadys.
