I have a 400 acre ranch on the Red River, just north of Vernon. I have never quail hunted it, but have always seen a lot of birds just traveling the ranch roads. Counted a covey of 41 quail under a deer feeder on Monday. I would like to hire someone with a couple of dogs to come guide us around the property next weekend 2/6. I am not opposed to the guide also being a shooter if the price is right. There will be two or three shooters in my group, myself and my brother, and possibly my father but most likely not for long as his health will not allow for heavy walking. Terrain is bermuda, blue stem, plumb thickets, ponds, cedars, some canyons, some scattered hardwoods. Typical West Texas pasture/ river bottom land. Lot's of knee high grass.

I know it's really short notice. Brother is traveling in and this is the only weekend his schedule allowed him to get free. If you're interested, best way to reach me is on cell - 817-458-6869

Thanks,
Bridger

Great looking pasture. I would do it free, and bring my Gator if I were closer. This is a great opportunity for someone looking for a place to get their dogs into some birds.

I agree with Bill. Would love to help out with the dogs and the Polaris but it's a little far for me AND SUPER BOWL WEEKEND!
Someone will jump in and help out.

Thanks Ringman and Bill for the comments. I appreciate the support.

I have a Ranger Crew I can bring, so we can easily make our way around. Also the roads are good enough to easily transverse in a truck. There is a nice travel trailer on site with water and electric, or I would provide a hotel room in Vernon 17 miles south, or I have a spare house that I frequently stay in 30 miles East, in Davidson OK.

There are parts of the property that have some grassburrs, and they're are parts that don't. I have not noticed grassburrs in the taller grass areas, but I have noticed them in some of the shorter grass areas. Keep in mind that I am not out there often. I'm going strictly off memory. I've only been there a few times in the last year. The property sits mostly dormant. However, I was onsite this past Monday for a couple of hours.

I know it's short notice, just thought I would try and round something up if possible. Looking to have a safe, fun time. We are not hard core quail hunters with high standards. More looking for a fun enjoyable day in the outdoors.

If anyone has a dog that would like to stretch it's legs, and needs a new place to try, I would love to partner up.

Worst case my brother and I will just walk it and see what we can kick up, and I'll report back. But a dog would sure be nice. Lol

Take care,
Bridger

If it was any other weekend, I would be all over it but we are running our dogs for a group of guys that have a Ranch near Abilene that weekend. Can't believe nobody has jumped on this.

If you are still having trouble finding someone, there is a guy that guides at the 10-2-4 game preserve named Truman, and he has some nice close working dogs and he does "take my dogs out to guys properties" deal all the time and is reasonable. Adam at 10-2-4 could give you his contact info. He has a little terrier that flushes on command and is a great dead bird finder that is a hoot, almost worth the price of admission there

Thanks again everyone for the insight and comments. I have hooked up with CoyoteHunters, and we are going to give it a try on Saturday. He is local to the area and was just hunting about 1/2 away this week. Should be a fun time!

You and CC both should check back in soon. This forum is getting slow. We need some new blood.

We had a great time! We started about 9am Saturday morning, and hunted about two and a half hours until around lunchtime, then came back out around 2:30pm and hunted a couple more hours. We ended up jumping 20 or so covey, the largest with 40+ birds, and the smallest with around 12-15 birds. We talked about it, and we felt that the longest time we went all day without jumping birds was probably 7 or 8 minutes. I couldn't even begin to guess how many shots rang out, but it sounded like a war. At the end of the day, we ended up field dressing a little over 50 really healthy birds. The brush country was making the downed birds very difficult to find. We lost 15 +/- birds that we simply couldn't locate no matter how hard we tried. Darryl (aka CoyoteHunter) and his buddy Jackie were our ace in the hole, they rarely missed. My brother and I looked like we were shooting blanks most of the time. Lol. Overall it was a great day, and we all ended up having a really good time! I will upload some pictures tonight, once I get them off of the camera.

We had a really nice hunt. You never know when you set up a hunt over the phone with people you dont know but this one worked out perfect. I really enjoyed it and met some really nice guys. Hopefully we will get to do it again someday.

I'm a little confused. Did you jump or point the coveys?

Ringman,
My dad did join in for a pass around the pasture, but then decided to sit out and watch from the Ranger. He had a good time though.

Bill,
Sorry about the confusion. I am not a frequent quail hunter so I made a poor choice of words there. We did have dogs pointing the birds. We also had some we just jumped up walking. It was a combination.

It was really a small world. Turns out Darryl and I know some of the same people, and Jackie's family and my family are from the same very small town. Both Darryl and Jackie had been driving by my house in Davidson, and hunting all around my family's property in Tillman Co. OK and we had never crossed paths before. Just that week they had hunted a half mile outside of my gate in Vernon, on one of their friends places. It was great to connect the dots.

My family has about 23 sections in that area, not including the pasture we were on, and we have never quail hunted any of it to my knowledge so I think next year we might spread out and try a few other pastures. We had such a great time Saturday, I am wondering if maybe we can find another quail rich pasture. Would love to try and get another THF'er in on it and meet some more great folk. I'll rattle 'yalls cage again next January and see if anyone is interested. I'm sure Darryl and I will try and hook up again as well.

I don't remember the last covey we walked up this year. You must be loaded with quail. Glad you had a good time.

I agree with Bill, your loaded with quail.
