Many, many seasons ago a 340 chambered in 30-30 Win was my first deer rifle. I recently became interested in finding one in that I'm a cast bullet shooter and these rifle have always served well for that purpose. I found one that had been rebarrel with a Savage replacement barrel. These barrels had no markings nor were they machined for sights. Overall the rifle was in very good shape and in that I'm a scout rifle guy, I decided to scout this little fellow being it didn't have sights on the barrel. I epoxied a Win M94 scout mount on to the barrel and it now sports the Weaver K4 Classic Scout scope. I also installed a Pachmayr grind to fit Decelerator pad on it to extend the length of pull an inche along with a God'AGrip cheek pad to offset the drop of the comb. I'm using a 170-grain bullet of my design with Leverevolution powder and it is "scary" accurate. It looks like it will give my Savage 10FCMs a run for the money!

Nice project! My older cousin always hunted with one of those (open sights) back in the 80s.

What epoxy did you use and how long will it hold?

Thanks guys! What epoxy did you use and how long will it hold? JB Weld. I've used it on a number of scout mounts over the years and have never had it fail.

My very first centerfire rifle was a Savage 340 in 222. It was a good rifle, I killed a lot of critters with it. The extractor and side scope mounts weren't very good, but other than that I got a whole bunch of enjoyment out of that gun.

I still have a Savage 340 chambered in .30-.30, but mine is labeled "Western Field."
It is my standard loaner gun to new adult hunters and has accounted for 5 or 6 "first deer" so far.
Neat scout mod on that little guy.
