This is my daughters first year hunting; so far she's bagged a hog, a spike and this javelina (below). These have all been on Texas Youth Hunting Program hunts, a great program run by great people. Thank you TYHP! http://tyhp.alamark.com/

She took this yesterday (1/24/16) with a .243 at 107 yards out of a pack of about 20. We saw plenty of deer, javelina, bobcats, quail, dove, geese (overhead) and heard tons of coyotes. This was near Moore, TX just SW of San Antonio. Nice and cold tent camping. If you have never been down there the last pic is a good representation of the brush we were hunting in. EVERYTHING has thorns or pointy things just waiting for you! Javelina backstrap will be on the dinner table this week.

Tell that young lady good Job, That will be some very good memory for you both.

That is a fantastic program and my son started on it this year. His Pronghorn hunt was successful, the deer hunt was canceled due to weather, there is a turkey hunt coming up. There are not many opportunities here, but I will be taking the hunt master coarse in April so maybe I can stir a hunt or two up for the panhandle aria.

I recommend this program to any one with kids who want to hunt.

Thank You
Robert

Congratulations! The TYHP is a great organization. Took my son hunting with them last year and even though we were both pretty experienced we still learned something. The guys and gals that volunteer their time are simply amazing. Can't say enough good things about them.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I was hesitant about the meat but I hear good and I hear bad so I thought I'd give it a try, thinking slow cooker or smoked then pulled for tacos...?

Congrats to you and your daughter. I want to get my 9 yo daughter into that program but she needs to complete her hunter's safety ed first. Do you have any advice or information for children taking the course? Or do they just get enrolled in the regular course with adults? I guess I could always take it again with her so she wouldn't be alone with a bunch of adults.

CenTex, I took my daughter to Bass Pro when they hosted hunter safety and just sat through the class with her. There were about 20 kids in the class and all parents stayed along with them. It's the same class for kids/adults. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions on getting on the TYHP hunts; I'm happy to help.

Thanks Navasot, I think I'll follow your path here, pics look good. Did you put it in the oven? Temp/Time?

I put it on the grill.. close to the fire for a minute or so on both sides then set on the high rack and cooked slow

I followed this recipe and it came out great! I'll be using this again for some hog backstrap I have in the freezer: http://georgiapellegrini.com/2010/10/28/recipes/adobo-javelina-backstrap/
