Ok so I know the difference between ACP and GAP. I know GAP is shorter. But I have been wondering... and this is hypothetical as well. Could you safely fire 45gap through a 45acp gun? Much like a 38special through a 357mag or 44special through a 44mag!! Again not that I would need to do this. Just a random thought, lol.

Won't work right. The GAP cartridge will not headspace properly because the ACPs headspace on the mouth of the case. It is possible the extractor on some pistols might latch onto the extractor groove of a GAP cartridge and allow the firing pin to light it off, but it's probably NOT a good idea.

No, you can not fire 45 GAP in an ACP. The GAP achieves it's speeds in a smaller package by increasing the pressures of this round to get the 45 ACP performance. If you were to fire the GAP in a 45 ACP, you will for sure have a high pressure issue. Just don't do it!

Glock uses the same size frame for a 10mm and a 45 ACP... but somehow shooting a GAP at 22k PSI out of a 45 ACP will damage a gun that handles 35k PSI 10mm?

If the extractor will hang on to the rim to fire, I highly doubt anything destructive will happen.

It's not the firing of it that causes the problem. It's the after effect of too much pressure that causes the problem. The recoil springs in a 45 ACP would be for the lower pressure 45 ACP rounds. Fire the 45 GAP in an ACP, you will certainly have higher pressure than a 45 ACP round, and can/could damage to the slide, extractor, and/or recoil springs.

Go buy a 45 ACP and shoot GAP in your pistol, and let me know how it does.

If I had GAP brass, I'd do it. A starting GAP load is lower pressure than a max ACP load. Put a stiffer recoil spring in the pistol if battering the frame was a concern, and get after it.

Granted, it really makes no sense to do.

I don't want to, nor have a reason to do so. It was just a thought. But after I posted this I remembered that 357 and 38 are rimmed, in a revolver as oppose to a semi rim in a semi auto. Clearly if you could get the round to stay in position for the striker to fire it off, then all the other factors mentioned come into play. Again, this was a hypothetical scenario, I have no intent to ever use a round that was not intended for my particular firearm.
