My son is going on a youth turkey / hog hunt. They must use a shot gun, and they require buck shot for hogs. He will be using a Rossi 20 ga single barrol break over with modified choke. What size buck shot would be best? I have 0 shotgun knolage and an equal amount of hog hunting knolage confused2 my guess would be 3" 000 confused2 I had already bought slugs in anticipation of the hunt. bang

Thank You
Robert

3" 000 will work but 00 is better IMO. Keep the shots close and aim between the eye and the ear. If the shot is too far then don't take it. Not sure the set up, but if they are putting up ground blinds for hogs they need to feed close. I'd be comfortable with 20-25 yrds. 30-35 yrds is pushing it with a 20 gauge/modified choke. Just pound in his head if he shoots a pig with that scatter gun, reload ASAP and be ready to shoot again without hesitation. It will knock a pig dead but you have to hit him right and needs to be in range. A pig in range will ROLL with buckshot from a 20 or 12 gauge as long as you hit them like you are supposed to. Small pigs, you can hit in body if you want to. Big pigs, shoot them in the head/neck or good luck finding them unless you are pretty close. In other words, don't take body shots on big pigs with that gun or it will end up in disappointment. Shoot the head, settle bead between eye and ear, squeeze. Good luck. up

X2 what skinnerback said, but be aware that little rossi is gonna kick like a mule with that 3" magnum round. I would NOT use a smaller/lower (2.75) round - (too few pellets - will significantly reduce success).

Thanks guys, I will make sure he reads your post as well, It is a youth hunt so he is restricted to the shot gun. If I had my way he would have his .308. He is 12 years old but built like a bull dosser, weighs 200, all he has shot in this gun has been 3" mag loads so he can handle it. I sure do appropriate your input.

Also - a better round (with a flight-control type wad) will make a better pattern at a distance. Choke type may or may not make difference , depending on round selected.

I suggest buying some, and do some test-shots (at anticipated distance & with life-size target drawn on a board) to maximize success AND to determine the optimum aiming for the scatter-gun with those rounds. I did exactly this, and took a nice coyote this weekend (raiding my chicken-pen).

I agree with skinner,

might want to pattern it with the choke you have on

Another vote for skinner and also patterning the gun/ammo combo.

One of these days I'll perfect these and see how they handle a hog. They shoot low for some reason but never deviate really left to right in my experience.

I would bet the #3 buckshot would be better in 20 guage as well. 18 .25 caliber balls, definitely improves your chances on attempting a head shot. Especially for just a kid, with a bead site.
