All the reasons given above make sense, but Dan I agree with you. I guess it's because most of my hunting history has been (usually) shooting the first buck that came by. Naming your deer means you live in a world of surfeit deer that I've rarely experienced.

Ranches I have been on it was easier for the LO to identify a buck for me by a name. I don't name bucks on my own place. If I did that would make them seem more like a family pet. Some ranches name big bucks for the ease of identification when they have lots of big bucks running around.

Such words as "small" or "young" added to the number of points in the rack has always been sufficient for the guys that I've hunted with for some 35+ years. Of course, anything larger gets called "nice", "good", or "great" once it's hanging from a meat pole.
