Hey all, i recently was given a winchester model 70 (post 64) in winchester 300 mag. I have been loading for a few rifles for a while and the slowest burning powder i have on hand is imr 4350. I tried working up an accurate load with this powder and 180 gr pills, but no dice. Best groups from 65 to 67.6 grains was 1.5 inches. Does anyone have any recommendations for a new powder to try? Really would like to stick to 180 grainers. I should note that with the 4350 it showed early pressure signs (around 67 grains). Im guessing the 4350 is just to fast burning. Anyway, any reccomendations would be helpful. Thanks!

I've had good luck with IMR4831 and H4831SC. Most recent load with IMR4831; 69.5gr & 180 accubond have been good but havent tested past 300 yrds.

Thanks guys, i believe i saw those powders in stock last time i checked out the gun shop. I heard h-1000 was used in the military m248 load. But that was for a 220 gr pill. Anyway, ill pick one up when i get out of work. Any proven load recommendations for the 180 grain loads with the h-1000??
I like the idea of the 4831 since i can load it in my 25-06 too...........decisions decisions.

H4831, IMR 4831, H1000, IMR 7977, 4000MR, all good choices for the 180 grain bullet weights.

If I was going to shop for a new powder to shoot 180s in a .300 Win Mag, I think I'd be looking for Re26.

My now departed early '90's M70 Classic SS 300 Winnie was not too picky, but under it's preferred diet of 180gr SBT's, or 180 gr NBT's/NAB's it was a dependable MOA or better in my usual 4 shot groups when I was having a good blood pressure day, stoked with the Sierra Book Accuracy Load of 71.6 gr's of IMR 4831, in either RP or WW brass and lit with RP Magnum primers. I am quite certain that a better trigger & glass would have helped make it mo bettah.

I load mine with 69-70 gr IMR 4350, depending on the bullet, with no pressure signs.

I had very good luck with RL17 and 178 A Max. I just did my first round on the 208's with Retumbo and am pleased so far

I have run 71.0gns of IMR 4350 behind the Sierra 180gn Gamekings in multiple 300's and lots of full freezers can attest to its abilities. It's at max or a tad bit over, so work up to that if you try it out.

+1 on KM Stevens loads over more than a couple 300 Winnies in a variety of 180gr'ers. Last one, an early '90's M70 Classic SS I wish I'd kept, p'fred the IMR a scootch better @ a scootch heavier load in RP brass & RP mag primers. When you get down to the minutia of under a MOA's it comes down to the Lot #'s of the components too

Look at the Sierra book loads for a starting place. FWIW all of my 300's liked FB bullets mo bettah too.

Best load right now IMR 4831 set at 45 degrees, 70.8 grains on 200 grain ELDX. I could not get the 220 grain ELDX to group no matter what I tried. Best load on 180 grain SST is also 70.7 grains.

Seems like you guys have the .300wm under control.
I have a Tikka in .300wm.

All right boys....Ive got this powder in 1LB cans, win 760, H 335, IMR 4895, and Reloader 15.
Please give me any advice. on loads you would recommend.

BTW heavy bullets. 178s and 180s

Start here......none of those powders are ideal for a 300wm. Only W760 is even mentioned on their load list and its one of the slower options. For a 300wm with 180's, you will want to find IMR 4350 / IMR 4831 / IMR 7828 or H1000, to name a few.

That was just the air temp that I was shooting that morning where I got the best grouping. Some say that The IMR powder is temp sensitive. I tend to write down everything when doing load workups. Little OCD that way.
