 Winchester Model 70 bolt question

I have a 25-06 and a 270 model 70. The other night, I took them both out to clean like an idiot at the same time. Then after moving things around, I couldn't tell which went in which gun. My question is, does it matter? Or would they both fit either gun? Is there any way to tell if it does matter?
These things are not my area of expertise, but I don't want to go shooting if it does matter.

I guess you're talking about the bolt. The cases are basically the same. I don't think it matters.

If the bolts headspace differently you might notice tighter chambering of a live round on either one. If you do then it's quite possible you inadvertently switched them.

On second thought, aren't the serial numbers engraved on the bolt bodies?? I think they are!

Are they both the same bolt? The 70 uses a couple different types. Both are pushing 30-06 brass. That's the basics. Refer to rr post for the details.

It matters immensely. There is no guarantee that the headspace is even close. But, there should be serial numbers on the bolt. Match them to them gun...

On second thought, aren't the serial numbers engraved on the bolt bodies?? I think they are! I just checked several M70's almost all had the SN's (or at least the last 4 digits) on the bottom of the bolts. Hopefully at least one of yours will have that.

If you ever reload, put everything off the bench except the one powder you intend to use. Just following the trend here...

Like taking two guns to the ranges and have both ammo on bench grab wrong ammo for wrong gun, scare da shirt out of ya.

Yes it makes a TREMENDOUS difference. Improper headspace can be a potential huge dangerous situation. Check the bolts carefully for the last 4 digits of the serial number engraved of the back side.

A question of safety. Excessive headspace can cause a case to fail.
Just check my Model 70s, and every one of them in the safe has at least the last four digits of the sn engraved on the bolt. If they're old enough, they may have the entire serial number on the bolt.
