My temperature light turned red on my Gator toward the end of my quail hunt this morning. The Gator is 10 years old and I've never checked the coolant level. I just tried to check and the cap would not come off for me. I noticed a small overflow plastic bottle just to the right of the radiator. It looked as if it had an easy cap to remove. I don't have any coolant at home so I just let it go for the time being. Do I add coolant to the overflow, or bottle or take the radiator cap off? Can I just pick up some coolant at Walmart?

Don't pop the radiator cap until the engine is stone cold. Put it in the overflow bottle. It should have lines to indicate level. Coolant not water.

If you can, get a look inside that cold radiator. Check for leaks.

Didn't it just get serviced?

Yep, just pour in overflow, check Owner's manual or internet on which type to use. But ya, don't open unless its been sitting for a whike. Might also check you don't have brush/leaves/dirt in your radiator fins. Hose out with regular hose if so (no pressure washer).

I just finished topping it off with Prestone. I did the best I could cleaning out the radiator fins. We'll see what happens. The light went out when I got up out of the pasture and picked up a little speed.

Bill ,
Check your fan and make sure that it is working. You may have blown the fuse. It cooled off when you picked up speed because you were forcing air through the radiator. If the fan was not working and you are using low gear which revs your motor up more, you probably overheated the radiator and it boiled over at some point. The fan problem has been a problem for the Kawasaki engine for a long time. I think your gator has a Kawasaki engine.

Bill be sure to check you engine oil level and be sure it dosnt have any extra.

You need high pressure to clean the fins good... over 100psi and use a wand to blow it out from the inside.

I didn't see a compressor in your garage Bill, but Nav is on the money. Exactly how we blow out our radiators when bush hogging, and they fill up with chaf real quick.

You need a long wand type air nozzle and a big old compressor. Could you get a can of computer air down in there and blast it from the inside out? If not, run it over to the dealer and borrow their wand.

Or load up and boggie to Rhome and we can have mud derby in my back yard.

Forgot the fan. You can still hear it kicking on and off, right?

I've driven it around the neighborhood a couple of times with no problems. The true test will be going slow in the field.

I can hear mine when it comes on but it comes on rarely. Drive it around, get it warm and park it in the driveway. Go get your beer and watch the temp gauge while you SIP it guzzler, I mean Bill. You will hear it come on. If it does not come on before it overheats you gotta get that fixed before fielding it again.

I mostly hunt with a friend on his Ranger. I haven't had it back in the field since I added the coolant.

I feel like you're avoiding the question about the fan grin Now dangit, is the fan working or not?
