My Vet has a Brittany that he bought and had trained up in Kansas, supposedly spent a bunch of money on him and has never taken him hunting. I think he got him at around a year old and he is 3 now. I'm picking him up this afternoon and taking him with us to get him out. Just seems like the right thing to do, he just stays up at the vets office all the time. I hope he listens and I dont spend the weekend looking for him. He will have an e collar and gps so should be good. I'm just nervous something is going to happen to him. Haven't ever taken someone elses dog hunting without them being there. Would you?

I have but was a little uneasy about it, even though I trained the young pointer.

CC, The Vet is not loaning you the dog. He just gave you the dog. Think about it.

I would if I knew the dog. If I have no idea what's going to happen when I let him out of his box, no. Looking for a lost dog sucks.

We have GPS and a Kawasaki Mule. The first spot we will let him out, is a large pasture WAY away from any roads. I will see how he does on a check cord first anyway. If he will respond to the whistle and come to his name, IMA cut him loose!

You might want to run him with the checkcord on until you get a feel for what he is going to do or how well he is listening to you. I bet you will have to burn some of that earwax out of his ears with your collar for a little while. He probably will be teed up for sure. But after that cactus and rocks start eating on him for a while, he will start looking for you. You appear to be a bonafide dog man and bird hunter and I am almost positive that you have never left a dog in the field. They always go home just like they came. He will be fine.

You are correct, I have never left a dog in the field. Thought I was going to have to a couple of times but I haven't had to yet. Have always said if it did happen, I would be there till well after dark looking and if I leave the field that night, the other dogs will stay in the field too (in the Mule and truck box of course) I will feed them all and put them up for the night and be there at daylight the next morning (might even just go eat and come back out that night). I'd leave one box open with a bowl of water in it. I'm sure he will do good. After all, he's a Brittany.

I lost one once. It was his first time on this certain property. He beat us back to the ranch house, so I know he didn't smell the truck.

There are several things you have going for you:
1. He is not in shape. It is going to be warm this weekend. He will not go too far IMO. 2. He is soft right now physically along with his feet. That will slow him down at some point. 3. Pulling a long checkcord through all of that cover will pay a toll on him also.
He will be in your pocket after a while. His tongue will get the longest workout licking all of those sore spots. After all, he is a Brittany.

Yep, was thinking the same thing, let him go in a wide open spot, his tongue will be dragging the ground before he gets to any cover. One good thing about our place, no stickers and very little cactus. mesquite thorns and Briars in the creek bottoms are about the worst thing out there, pretty cushy place for the dogs.

I have been doing it all wrong all these years. I did not know or think you could hunt quail without cactus. LOL!

I've been running one thats not mine, and didn't know me at first. First time out I took it very easy on her. Handling her very little in the field, just us getting to know each other. When I could see she was getting thirsty, I would call her in. Give her a drink, then send her back out to hunt. I stopped at Jack in the box, and bought her a jr bacon cheeseburger before dropping her off. Second time in the field, we had figured each other out a little more. She paid a little more attention to me, and got homemade jerky after that run. The third time out she really started working with me as team, and I had a treat for her after the run. By the fourth time, you would have thought she was my dog.
I wish I could have spend a couple of days with her, before running her. It just wasn't an option.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Yeah, don't listen to me. I'm just an idiot.
Lol. Duckbill that was funny! The dude up top has already taken lots of bone before this deer, both mule and whitetail.

I would and I would let him ride upfront on the way up there. That way he would get used to being around you. Hope he knows his name. Birds will stop him hopefully. Electricity will improve his hearing.

He did good as far as recall and he is in pretty good shape, but the two coveys he was part of, he ran straight through them with Daisy on point. I'm going to keep him through the week and take him Saturday morning to my training area and put him on a couple of pigeons before I take him back. I'm glad we took him, he really enjoyed getting to open up and run.
