Tikka CTR 260 with a Bushnell elite Tactical 3-12x44 shooting 130 grain Nolser Accubond 42 grains of h 4350 and Lapua brass. Laying prone in the back of the truck using a bipod and a rear sand bag. I was 3 for 4 at 400 and 500 yards on a 6"x 3' steel plate. I'm liking this longer range shooting. We tried to get to 800 but it got dark.

FiremanJG. I need to come get a lesson on the technical and mathematical aspects especially. I was cheating using a ballistics calculator instead of getting my own dope first. Since I had never shot past 200 or 300 yards I needed a reference point then went from there adjusting up or down.

Using a ballistic calculator isn't cheating, it is step one. But I can show you how to adjust things as needed to get the ballistic calculator to be reliable for future shooting.

Six inch by three foot or three inch?

Six inch by 3 feet. It gets pretty narrow at 500 yards . I was hitting pretty much where I aimed at 200-400 yards at 500 I was hitting about 3.5 inches low so I'm going to start at 500 when I go again and adjust my dope . It just got dark on us before I got it right. 800 is going to be tricky with a 12x scope I'm guessing.

So you were .2 MIL low, remove inches from your thinking.

Paint your targets white before shooting them. It is much easier to see the target as well as see where on the target the bullet impacted, so that you can make the correction. In other words, a white target at 500 that you did hit, but are low, measure it with the reticle. Hold the reticle on the center of the target and see if it is .1 low or .2 low, or .3 low. Say it is .2 low, turn the elevation turret "impact up" .2, shoot again. With white targets that works at any distance. When I have guys come to my range I make sure the targets are freshly painted the day before. We never go down range to inspect the targets, because we can see the black dot the bullet made inside the white field.

Long range silhouette matches were a lot of fun. Chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams out to 500 yards (standing off hand) is challenging and more doable than one would think.
