This is the main issue, that too many people over look. Every brand of cheap imported steel cased ammo that I have seen is bi-metal.

This is worth a read if you plan to shoot much steel: Brass vs. Steel Cased Ammo – An Epic Torture Test

From my perspective, the economics fall in favor of steel, and just replace your barrel if you actually shoot that much.

And the percentage of guys who will actually shoot out a barrel is very low. Guys will worry about barrel wear, and shoot 50 rounds a year. Doesn't make sense.

Just watch the lacquered steel ammo. Shoots OK but be sure not to leave one chambered in a hot barrel. The lacquer melts and the round gets glued into the chamber. Leave the bolt back after firing a bunch of rounds.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Ditto on the comment above about lacquer coated cases. They are making steel case ammo now with a polymer coating. This does not gum up.

It shoots them just fine. I won't hesitate to buy them now.

The problem that I ran up against was a build-up of the polymer coating in the neck area. The heat there transferred it to the chamber, where it built up until finally one day a chunk of polymer popped out while I was cleaning the rifle. (M1A)

The steel cases are also harder on the forward part of the chamber where the shoulder goes into the neck. Brass will not have much effect upon that, but steel will.

Honestly though, it is hard to imagine anybody who is really interested in accurate or precision shooting running steel-cased ammo through their gun in the first place. It is really there for the economy-minded spray and pray boys who are not really all that anal about accuracy or the life of the guns components anyway.

When I first bought my M1A, I imagined it would be a good, accurate target gun... Looking at the retarded way it is designed though, and all of the hoops you have to jump through to coax one of them to shoot fairly well for a while, reality set in so I went out and bought a case of the steel-cased ammo for it.

If I had a quality AR10 instead of the M1A, I wouldn't have touched steel-cased ammo with a ten-foot pole.

We grow too soon oldt - und too late shmart.
