And there is no way to go but forward. Last week was a mechanical nightmare and a very expensive mechanical nightmare at that. I am taking the explorer boat to the shop right now and was supposed to take the Airboat in today as well. Here lately the financial out-go has been a lot greater than the in-go. I looked and read all I could about changing the belt myself. I tore it down to the last step I can do until the belt gets here. If I ever had to do it again I could probably do it in 4 hours. I am actually very glad I decided to do it myself. Saves me about $800 or more.

Good for you Wal. That'll save you a chunk of money and help pay for all those new G&H.

Something has to give. I am not broke, I just get nervous when I can see our working account is below 6 months of sustainability. That makes me very very jumpy. I even held off on the G an H order. I have the cash from the sale, just reluctant to let a penny out the door that I really don't have to spend. I got one more duck hunt left. It will be the finally up at the lease the last weekend of North zone.
You never know, even G And H might have an end of season sale. I think 3 dozen this year and next year will cover my decoy purchases for the rest of my life.

Oh. BTW for anyone considering their own belt change. The stuff I read on the internet was wrong. Let me rephrase that WRONG OHHHHH OHHHHHH!! They said the prop shaft and gears(the upper shaft driving the propeller) weighs around 65 pounds. BULL-FREAKING-MALARKEY!!!!
I am a big dude. Not the strongest I have ever been but I can pick up 65 pounds with a finger. When I took out that last bolt, hell came to breakfast. That sucker is 150 pounds of it is a pound. It was going to the floor, all I did was slow it down. I'd like to spit some beachnut in the dude's eye that wrote 65 pounds.

True that. I am a reserved kind of guy when it comes to projects like this. When I finally get my mind to comprehend the mechanics of the project, I bull my way through it.

The belt broke, right? Hard to see in the pic but I imagine that's what it is. In other words, the drive gear is ok?

Is that belt coming out? Doesn't look like it will, and doesn't look broken.

The belt is torn but not all the way through. The new belt will be here end of the week. I got this by the nads. If you look at the belt on the right side you can see some strands sticking out.

You get that thing back together yet? No I am kind of peeved about that. I had a 4 day weekend off last weekend. I jumped on the fishing boat and cleaned out the tank under the deck. I installed a poly tank under the center console and cleaned the fuel system of any water. That boat is up and running now. The belt came in for the and I started putting it back together. To get to that belt, everything but the lower shaft and cog have to come off of the boat. Even the gear reduction unit housing comes off and it is the rear motor mount. So the motor is propped up with a bottle nose jack. I had to wait for some muscle to arrive. A friend came by and we went to put the eccentric gear back in ( I swear that thing is 130 pounds) and got it back in. That is when we discovered the company sent the wrong belt. I was just shaking my head. Not only that but I have to pay for shipping the new one and return of the old one. I didn't think it wise to get in a urinating contest with the company that makes the belt I need. So the belt is on the way and I will have it back together in about 4 hours after it arrives. For those that have airboats. This was a large job but it is doable. If I had the right parts and had to start all over again, I think I could do the whole job in 5 hours or so. Here are some shortcuts I learned. Get the rudders off and out of the way. Your are wasting time and you will eventually take them off. Put a large tarp in the bottom of the boat to catch the blades if they fall. The rear cover plate holding the blades in will allow them to fall as you loosen the bolts. If you own a single rotator the eccentric gear is about 70 pounds. If you own a counter rotator I think it is twice that. After removing the blades, place 2 by 10 boards over the stringers in the bottom of the boat to make it easier to walk around. Use zip ties to affix a large tray to the rear of the cage. There are a lot of tools involved and you have no place to keep them. I was putting the where I could but when they would fall it is unbelievable how they all manage to bounce way up under the fuel tank. If anyone suffers a busted belt don't hesitate to call me. I can walk you through it or if you are close enough I can just come help you.
