Can anyone talk me out of going with a CDS scope (30-06)? With all the proper info given, are they THAT accurate out to 500 or 600 yards or should I prepare for disappointment? roflmao
I've shot holdover reticle scopes for the last 10-15 years but I'm thinking very seriously about going with a CDS.
Thanks

Maybe accurate if you never change your ammo...you can go with a good MOA or MIL reticle and accomplish the same thing no matter what you are shooting. Download the 'Shooter' app and you can keep all your data for every rifle.

Weather it works or not, it is a gimmick. Probably is an MOA turret in a "custom" wrapper.

What is it going to do for you when the wind blows?

MIL/MIL and learn how to use it. Dug up an old thread that pertains to this.

I'll speak for the defense, though I don't have a CDS scope. Certainly you can do more with a turreted scope, if more needs to be done. But, let's look at the scope needs of my old 270. I've been using the exact same terrific shooting load for 30 years. No need to change. If the OP's rifle load situation is similar, the CDS should work just fine. As for the wind, even the diehard turret guys crank for distance but hold for wind. Arguably, you could hold for wind better if you had a mil/mil or MOA scope, but that only holds true if you can read the wind, which will often be a WAG at best. So yes, the OP should do quite well with a CDS scope.

If, however, the OP has a 6.5 Creed and an assorted pile of different weight and shape bullets, go with the turrets.

As to accuracy, for a time I had a Burris FFII 4.5-14 scope on my first 260. The scope had BDC dots. I calculated the trajectory at various distances and then tested the load and the BDC dots at distances out to 400 yards, which was about as far as I was gonna shoot normally. And, one evening, here came a coyote that I ranged at 400. Put that dot on him and dropped him on the spot. Same with a pig some days later. I was pretty pleased. Still, I knew that at 480 or 535 yards, I would be lost. So...I "turreted up" on the 260. All the other rifles have good scopes with BDC dots or lines.

I have a CDS and I do believe it works if you know your true speed. I recently ran into a problem where my new barrel sped up because it broke in. In a hunting rifle not a huge deal if shooting deer or hogs, if you get into shooting heads to save pelts or need to hit precise targets it could throw you off and you would have to send in for new turrets.
It's a cool system and thankless. I'm just learning the turret stuff and I think I will probably get more.
But guessing for the '06 CDs would work

Ive got one on a .243 It works fine out to 600. I don't do a lot of long range shooting and consider 400 a practical limit for the .243 and my abilities.( mainly because my local range goes out to 400 and I get a lot of practice at ranges out to that yardage) The caveat with CDS is what others have mentioned, you have to have a static load and know all your specs. No windage allowance.
That said I think they are nicer to work with that dotz but if you get serious about long range, my friends in the know tell me the Leupold with M1 turret is the way to go without going overboard.

I bought one recently when it was $150 off at Cabelas for my 338 Federal. I bought it because I'm trying to keep the weight down on that rifle and have something more accurate than a generic BDC reticle. I

Thanks for everyone's input!
This is solely for hunting. Not competition. I realize to the true ballistics guys it's "cheating" and an easy way to not have to learn target turrets and not have a chart. But, I'm ok with that.
I have shot the same bullet for many many years and don't intend to change. So wanting to switch ammo and said cds being off then isn't a concern I don't think. I do though wonder about elevation as 90% of hunting is done in central, north and east TX. But every year I do hunt west Texas (elevation 3,000' +/-) and plan to use it in CO every other year at about 8-10k feet.

Just changing elevation within Texas your corrections will need adjusting. Going to Colorado, it will cause a significant change.

Competition or hunting, shooting beyond 300 yards the wind will blow any bullet, no matter how much of a hot rod cartridge, off the intended target. Be it hide or steel, the wind doesn't care. The Leopold has a duplex Reticle, correct?

The biggest use I have for a MIL reticle is exact wind holds for any distance, based on judgment of wind speed and wind angle. The only way to get proficient at that is tons of practice, no matter what scope one is using.

If there's significant concern about elevation and shooting angles, just get the iStrelok app for your iPad or iPhone or Android. Enter your scope, bullet MV, bullet, BC, etc, and it'll tell you everything you need to know. But what if you have a Russian army scope? No problem. Pick it from the list. Tasco, Schmidt and Bender, NF, Burris, no problem.,Leupold with B&C reticle? No problem. VH reticle? No problem.

Also gives deflection due to wind speed and angle, but you still need to judge (guess) at those factors.

I put the pertinent info on a strip of blue masking tape and stick it to the top of the front bell of the scope. Change loads...change tape.

All the different CDS scopes come in a plethora of reticles and leupold will put any of their reticles in a scope for you. That said, the vx6 I'm looking at comes with a reticle that has no holdovers but does have horizontal markings, for windage.

For the record, I'm NOT arguing that "your way" is not "better". What I'm wanting to know is are the cds scopes "deadly" accurate out to 500 or 600 yards.

The one time I shot to 600 it was deadly accurate. My set up only goes to 600

As I said before. You change your temp, elevation, and DA as much as you are going to,and your custom turrets won't be correct anymore.

JG, what I'm thinking about doing is getting two dials. One at 1,500' elevation/50* for Texas hunting and one at 8k'\40* for CO/mtn hunts. I realize temp can effect it, in some cases dramatically, but in most cases "close" in temp is ok.. Like 500 yards and less?

I have VX-6 with CDS on my Browning X-Bolt 300 Win Mag. It has the T-MOA reticle. I have my custom turret set for Elk hunting (round, temp and elevation). Nice thing about the T-MOA reticle, you can still compensate for windage if need be. Also, you can always take the custom turret off and use the original turret.

It is pretty easy to use my app to tell me the difference between 400 yards and no wind and 400 yards with 12 mph wind. I can take that MOA adjustment and use the T-MOA reticle to offset the difference.

You should be very impressed with the Leupold CDS. Mine tracks very well.

With most of my hunting shots at trophy game being in low light situations, I do not like a busy reticle. IMO, the CDS has a better hunting application than using MOA/MOA or MIL/MIL for hunting out to 500 yards. Of course if I were long range hunting over 500 yards like some do, this type of scope is not the best option.

I hear many complaints from customers that the CDS turrets are not very precise. Don't know personally.

I've heard this, too. I was wondering if any members had experienced this personally. I suppose any manufacturer is going to have the occasional fail.
